This is one of those 'multiple things are true' moments.

1) Musk is wrong, and cis isn't innately a slur. He certainly shouldn't be using twitter to wage his personal culture wars. Though I question if he actually means it any more than he did back when he was the left's darling. He sees an advantage in it to him - keeping the culture wars screaming means the Dem/Rep divide continues and there isn't enough unity to do what we all know needs to be done, tax the billioniaires and get UHC for everyone like every sane country on the planet does.

2) Cis is sometimes used as a slur, and using the same concepts as espoused by TRAs then people should be able to make their own choices here. But that will get made fun of, because this is about minority empowerment, not the normies expressing their own rights. This is why the culture war works. People are full of shit.

My understanding is that Musk has a transgender child that he's on terrible terms with, to the point that the child legally changed her name to distance herself from him. It's personal for Musk.

Eh, it's the correct term, isn't it? It's supposed to be a neutral, scientific term. Whenever I see people complaining about the term "cis" it's usually in the context of terms like "cis" making it harder to "other" trans people. You see the same energy from Boomers at Starbucks that demand "a normal coffee" and refuse to accept that the universe could be more complicated than that. "I'm not a cis man, I'm a normal man! And I don't want a grande medium roast, I want a normal regular coffee!"

Trans is not a slur.
Both are valid terms used in their respective fields.

Cis is latin for 'this side' as opposed to trans being latin for 'the other side.' But the term 'cisgender' wasn't added to any dictionary, the Oxford dictionary being the first, until 2015. It wasn't in common usage except in a very narrow technical sense, and even that only goes back to 1994. This is absolutely a new term.

I was definitely not born a cis male. Because the term didn't exist yet and I was never called a cis male until trans rights activists popularized the term in the last decade.

So 'correct term'? Scientific? These things have nothing to do with common parlance or indeed acceptability. Retarded was once a correct scientific term. It was retired when it was commonly used as a slur. Oriental was once considered correct parlance. For that matter, male and female are scientific terms.

How these terms are applied and what is considered appropriate is a social construct, not a scientific one.
