What, no one is talking about this? What's wrong with you! This looks like the best damn movie of the summer hands down! Where "Rise" was a loose re-imagining of "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes", "Dawn" looks like its own re-imagining of "Battle for the Planet of the Apes", only a thousand times better. This makes me forget Tim Burton's piece of shyte remake
As much as I enjoy Planet of the Apes movies, I find the whole premise of apes taking over completely silly and unbelievable. Same thing with zombie movies. Love them, but the entire premise is stupid. There is no fucking way apes or zombies could take over the planet. Several drone airstrikes or, worst case scenario, a nuke, would solve the problem pretty quick. "Intelligent apes have taken over Central Park and they're attacking humans! Ahhhhhh!" "Send in a squadron of F-18s, a few Apaches and some Blackhawks. Oh, and get a half-dozen Predators up in the air as well."
Borg, I guess you didn't see the last movie. It was totally explained how the apes were genetically engineered with a mutated virus that made them evolve, but the virus was also lethal to mankind. It mutated and wiped out most of the human population, which is where the new movie picks up.
I get the Captain Tripps part. In fact, that's why movies like 28 Days Later make slightly more sense than the original Romero zombie films. (Not making a qualitative assessment of the movies, just referring to the believability of the premise.) But I was referring to the original Planet of the Apes movies.
So, in the first movie (Rise), we see "background stuff" that establishes that a manned space mission had been launched and lost. Now that we are showing the rise of Caesar and the apes, will the next Apes movie after Dawn be a loose remake of Planet of the Apes and have that space mission return a thousand years later to a world run by apes?
Anyone planning to see this? Already CERTIFIED FRESH over at RottenTomatoes. I keep hearing good things about it...
I'll probably see it next weekend while I'm trapped in Norfolk on official travel... Why can't I ever get work travel somewhere cool...
I will say here that I'd like to see it. Reality, though, is it's very unlikely, since I go to so few movies. As for watching at home, I just lack the attention span on the small screen unless it's baseball. Otherwise I prefer TV shows. Looks good, though!
The zombies in the Romero movies are impossible to wipe out as they are simply what happens when humans die. The only way to get rid of them completely would be to wipe out the entire human race.
SyFy was showing all the early 70's POTA flix Wed & Thurs! Why they didn't air the 1968 Classic/Original I can't fathom!
Saw it. Excellent. Better than the first. Truly amazing acting/technical work bringing the apes to life. A tragedy of apic proportions. Of the summer movies (those that have premiered since May), this is the best of the ones I've seen (Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Godzilla, A Million Ways to Die in the West).
Haven't seen it yet, but I am really excited by the reviews. We get it on Thursday. I've got come comp cinema tickets to use so this is my choice. What I like about this is, unlikely the Burton remake, this doesn't really intrude too much on the classic movies, at least not the first two (which, in my opinion, are the best). So I can enjoy this without feeling like the reboot ghost is hanging over me big time.
Yes, you can take the new films as either prequel or reboot. I think of them as the latter. Possibly indirectly spoilerish:
I saw this movie the other day. This movie is really great. People clapped at the end, which is something that I've never really experienced. Also, some gut farted really loud twice during the movie and his girlfriend got up and moved to another seat. It was hilarious. This movie was great though, it had good drama, well fleshed out characters and great CGI and action. The apes looked real. I hope Bob Orci and Michael Bay takes notice. You can make a good scifi film with lots of action and still have great characterization and tell a great story and you don't need any half naked blondes.
Great movie! Nice to watch a sci-fi / action movie with some brains, interesting characters, and a story that doesn't feel like a retread of some other story. Very impressive looking apes. My only complaint is that I wanted to see more gorillas and orangutans. We see lots of chimps and bonobos. Maybe in the next one. I wonder how far in the future the next one will go? Will we meet the rebooted version of Dr. Zaius?
