Because any exoplanet might hold a wealth of information for us to benefit from, and the assumption that the only way to deal with someone we disagree with is by wiping out the biome of a planet.

I'm talking about eliminating elements of a biosphere that might be hostile to human life and thus an impediment to colonization.

What is wrong with that? I assume it would take years and we would preserve samples of the original biosphere for research.

If we somehow manage to develop the ability to travel from our solar system to another solar system, there's literally no reason for us to worry about "Earth-like" planets. The kind of energies involved in going FTL would enable us to terraform planets like Venus and Mars, or build Dyson spheres (which are vastly different than what's been presented in fiction), so there's no need for us to concern ourselves with Earth-like planets. At all.

 

And while we're on the subject....

Well shit... I started clicking through a lot of the Google images, and it appears on dozens and dozens of sites, either the original or edited versions which you can tell used my original for it. The sites are anywhere from blogs to government sites even some scientific/technology sites.

Fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck, I could of made.... ummmm dozens/hundreds of dollars?

Wiping out the ecosystem of an entire planet to suit ourselves is something worse than genocide.

 

While you're right in the sense that the definition of genocide relates to humans, the central theme is mass killing. Remember that you did not distinguish between life and intelligent life, therefore one must conclude that since you referred to an eco-system, which would inevitably include all life on said planet, you would wipe out anything you deemed hostile, including intelligent life.

Since there has yet to be a word invented for mass killing of aliens, @Faceman's use of genocide is the next best thing, and the spirit of what you are proposing is the same.
