I manwhored myself out to some big bodied woman to supplement my business income, and had enough quarters to go see this a few days ago. Below is my review. I will avoid major spoilers in the movie, but if you have seen the previews, you will have figured out what this movie is about. Death Race is about convicts racing in modified cars and other vehicles, and trying to survive. It is a mix between Spy Hunter, The A-Team, and The Fast & The Furious. It stars Jason Statham, Joan Rivers, and Tyrese Gibson. The movie set itself up at a brisk pace with a back story on how the protagonist got into jail, then from there, it is non stop action. Jason Statham is fast becoming one of the best action heroes around, and his acting is not bad either. Tyrese Gibson and Joan Rivers play great villains in their own way. One thing I will complain about though, is the whole movie seems to have been shot in semi sepia-tone. This gives the whole movie a surreal brown/grey-tinted feel. I've noticed this is becoming a trend, both in video games and film. I'm not crazy about it either, but for this movie, it works, and is only a mild annoyance. I sometimes wonder whether it's because directors are using it as artistic license, or if they are just too lazy to play around with the lighting to get the mood right, so they just tell post-production to just slap a filter on the entire film. If you like car chases, modified cars with weapons, and some gory death scenes, this movie will deliver, and then some. It is also pretty tame for a movie taking place in a prison, since we don't ever see any nudity (the male or female kind) or any prison rape scenes. But there is plenty of people getting crushed, burned, and thrown out of their vehicles. For a movie about cars, this was one of my favorites thus far. If they can give The Fast & The Furious good reviews, I'm certainly not going to feel bad about giving this one a ringing endorsement. Final Score: A
Saw it the other day. It has a couple of plot holes the size of Montana, but who cares? This movie wasn't about plot- it was about T&A, fast cars, and big guns. I thought it was okay.
Well, she's not a 20something, but if I had to classify Joan Allen, she'd definitely fall into the "hit it" and not the "skip it" category.
I miss the original 70's flick (this is a loose remake of) "Deathrace 2000"...it was crap, and campy as hell, but bad in a fun way. (Not saying this "remake" necessarily has to be bad...just not the silly original. A smaller film in scope and feel - but it could be fun.) When my ex, or my kids, or some of my of geek friends are driving around together, we see old people (or babies being pushed) or people just genuinely walking slow (or belligerent teens) across X-walks, and shout out the # of points they'd be worth!!! "Old woman in a walker! 100 points!"
This movie looks about as bad as they come. I think I'd rather go seen Vicky Christina Barcelona or the Sex and the City movie than this thing.
Just juding on the premise, I'd think this movie is more parts Twisted Metal than Spy Hunter, The A-Team, or The Fast & The Furious combined.
