I think a lot of people have been equating "defund" with "dismantle" as did the post to which I replied. Crazies are never satisfied, and they don't decide elections.
Back on topic, Defund the Police is a good idea wrapped up in a fucking moronic tagline that's all but guaranteed to put off everyone who doesn't already know what you mean. If it takes an 11x14" infographic to explain, you've already lost, and worse, make it easy for bad faith commentators (see: Tucker Carlson) to convince people who could be swayed on the merits that the idea is actually anarchy. This is why Biden will never say he agrees with it. It's not to shit on the protesters, it's because he has a country full of people who watch Tucker Carlson to deal with.
This. As I saw someone post on Twitter yesterday (and of course I can't find it now), a good slogan shouldn't need footnotes.
Now, is it possible to get something as pithy as "Defund the Police"? Probably not, because the issue is complex, though "Replace the Police" would be a good start. Multiple taglines might also work, or subtitles. "Not the Police: Fund Social workers for Social Work", "Not the Police: Fund Dog Catchers for Catching Dogs", things like that.
It's okay. Kinda runs counter to the idea that we need less policing overall though, which is a big component of DTP. More ideas: "Curb the Police", "Leash the Police", "Bust Police Unions"
Wouldn't that be a consequence of reducing everything down to sound bites and, indeed, slogans? Emotionally, seeing what the police is doing, I'm of the fuck the police, disband them all. But while that may be good troll during a standoff with the pigs, O2C's points are indeed correct.
"Rethink the police" would be a way better way to convey the idea of changing from the model where cops are doing everything the social safety net should be doing except way worse, way more expensively, and with a side order (or possibly main dish) of unnecessary violence. Part of the trouble is that there are people who legitimately think that police should be abolished in their entirety.
Defund the police is a good slogan, because it emphasizes just how broken many see the current state of affairs to be. Yes there are lots of practical problems with just getting rid of police altogether, but things are so bad that is seen as preferable to the status quo by them. It's standard negotiating tactic, go in big.
"Defund the Police" is the compromise. A lot of protesters are up to "Abolish the Police". But to the impatient and those arguing in bad faith to sway others, "Defund" is just as bad.
Side note I'm so pumped about Tyson's upcoming charity boxing! He's looking great, still has that great bob and weave defense and you know his power will always be there. Whether Holyfield or some other opponent they better say their prayers!
Police unions shouldn't have a say. They should be ended. Completely, mercilessly, without possibility of reinstitution.
Then keep to "abolish the police". Oh wait, that didn't work so well for "Abolish ICE". The game is making the demand impossible to dissmiss without looking evil. "Abolish the police" fails. "Defund the Police" only works against people arguing in good faith - the Tucker Carlsons of the world are not, and they have a lot of sway. $20 says that Federal Farmer watched Tucker Carlson, or a similar YouTuber before starting this thread, for instance.
And yet it's working. I agreed with this, but it's an example of an extreme. Police should be able to unionise, much like all workers should be able to. There are plenty of industries that involve people given lots of responsibility (aviation, medical professionals, heavy industry, etc) which have strong unions but rules which also mean that someone misusing their responsibility is turfed without mercy.
Currently talk about a State Initiative to limit Security Forces collective bargaining to pay and benefits.
is there an exact definition of "militarization" and what that entails? Otherwise it's open to interpretation.
