Blowing up a section of pipeline creates a day's worth of news havoc and takes a week max to fix.

Setting off bombs at selected points in the tank farm at JFK makes for the kind of spectacular move that terrorists like.

All the reports say they were going for the tank farm, so no, that would actually have been bad.

Enough to roast quite a few marshmallows I presume. Moulinrouge is right though in pointing out that fighting them in Iraq clearly doesn't eliminate the risk at home. The attraction of Iraq to terrorists is more something like 'why bother buying a plane ticket when we can kill Americans on a daily basis right here?'
Anyway, beside the usual button pushing on rightwingers, I think it's a good thing the FBI seems to have its eyes wide open, at least on this one.

Judging from the satellite photos on Google, the actual airport tank farm would take out several staff parking lots, the highway leading into the airport, and the parking lot of what looks like an air cargo operation.

You MIGHT lose glass in some of the airline terminals.

You'd lose operation of JFK for at least a month, unless they took out the main fuel tank farm at the west end of the airport property also, which would take out any other airports on the fuel distribution system since you'd lose the ability to offload fuel from tankers there.

Why would that be? Isn't there a much better payoff in something like blowing up JFK than there is from a few dozen IEDs in Iraq? I have to assume the capable guys are here, working on something. Using them in Iraq would be a waste, when somebody otherwise incompetent can do a thoroughly competent job of blowing himself up at a checkpoint.

Gul, the hit to the economy alone from JFK being down for a month, and the chaos it would cause in US and international flight schedules would both be disastrous. Which would have been the point, of course. Any body bags would just be a bonus.

It would be bad, but not disastrous. Schedules would be juggled at Newark and LaGuardia to accommodate more international flights; Islip would add some flights; trucking, shipping, and train freight would continue to operate. Sure, many flights would have to be canceled, but flights aren't generally the backbone of the economy and the ones that are truly important won't be the ones canceled.

I'm much more worried about the Hudson River crossings than about an airport being taken out for a short while.
