She's not only the person who discovered the bodies of Harvey Milk and Mayor Moscone, but she immediately had to step into the role of acting mayor before the police had removed the bodies. Supposedly, she was just popping by to talk to one of them and found them dead on the floor with no warning. That has got to fuck you up. And then, you've got to function immediately. Not only do you have a couple of dead bodies to worry about, but you're also now the fucking mayor of a major US city. And you're a woman in 1978. Doesn't matter that you're living in one of the most progressive cities in the US, in one of the most progressive states in the US, you're still going to be shat upon.

So, you lock as much of that away as you possibly can and go on with your life. But as you get older, it gets harder to keep shit pushed down so you can go about your life. Sooner or later, it starts to leak out from behind the seals. At first a trickle, then a massive flood. At this point, the inside of her skull is probably a regular house of horrors. You try functioning at nearly 90 with such things in your head.

My only major beef with her is that given all that, she should have walked away (at least) six years ago to play with the great grandkids and, ya know, touch grass. And it's not just her, Washington has too many of these folks that think that the town will fall apart without them. I'm tolerant of an older person who got there late in life, but you've been there 30-40 years?
Go rest. Or at least change jobs.
