Undoubtedly, she's one of the several congresspersons who are on Alzheimer's meds. I don't think it's unreasonable that there be an age cap in political office. Perhaps age 70? Because we're seeing so many upper 70s, upper 80s seniors who hold powerful positions and look like they barely know what the hell is going on, Feinstein being one of them. Who gets paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to walk around without being aware of anything? Clearly, congresspeople. We need to change that.

She's not only the person who discovered the bodies of Harvey Milk and Mayor Moscone, but she immediately had to step into the role of acting mayor before the police had removed the bodies. Supposedly, she was just popping by to talk to one of them and found them dead on the floor with no warning. That has got to fuck you up. And then, you've got to function immediately. Not only do you have a couple of dead bodies to worry about, but you're also now the fucking mayor of a major US city. And you're a woman in 1978. Doesn't matter that you're living in one of the most progressive cities in the US, in one of the most progressive states in the US, you're still going to be shat upon.

So, you lock as much of that away as you possibly can and go on with your life. But as you get older, it gets harder to keep shit pushed down so you can go about your life. Sooner or later, it starts to leak out from behind the seals. At first a trickle, then a massive flood. At this point, the inside of her skull is probably a regular house of horrors. Of course, being absolutely cynical about everyone and everything is easy. You never have to get your hopes up, you never have to work for anything (Why bother? No need to put any real thought in your positions, you just adopt a slightly contrarian view and you're golden! No need to engage in complex thought processes or have to worry about getting your heart broken because your preferred candidate wasn't 100%. All you have to do is pick one that has some of the same views as you but has no hope of getting elected. Then you can pretend to be above it all, and not have to worry about getting your hands dirty when it comes time to pitch it to actually accomplish anything. Because otherwise, your feelings might get hurt, and we can't have that, can we? Much easier to back a candidate you know from the start has no hope, than to back one that has a reasonable chance of winning and then might have to do something you don't like, because the nature of politics is that we never get everything that we want, so we compromise and try to make things at least slightly better if we can't solve everything. You're not willing to compromise on anything. Not from a moral standpoint (because, yes, when it comes to things like LGBTQ+ being able to live their lives in peace, compromise isn't always a good solution, so I get that) but because you're afraid to deal with the emotional pain that will result when only 9 of the 10 ideas you like are pushed for by a politician. Damned if you ain't as fragile as UA and FF. And in as much denial of the subject as they are. Sad.

In the early 90s, I got to watch a friend of mine with a broken back suffer not only the horrors of trying to navigate the American medical system with no insurance but also trying to do it while being HIV+ and a gay man. The fucking kitchen staff were too afraid to bring his meals into his hospital room because they thought they might catch AIDS because of it. He later felt so helpless because of everything that he committed suicide in December of '93. You know what hit the market early in '94? AZT and a bunch of other drugs that gave people with HIV a fighting chance to survive. Had my friend lived, he might have gotten those drugs, he might then have been able to get the treatment to fix his back that he needed. And had Reagan not been such a homophobic asshole (or, indeed, much of the medical establishment, because clues that HIV was circulating in the population had been obvious since the early 70s, but because the victims were gay, sex workers, and/or drug users, nobody gave a shit) that treatment might have been available long before my friend got sick.
