Loved the bit at the end where since he is technically a new member he can file 15 new bills and all will be common sense gun laws keeping this issue in the spotlight.

I was apparently late to see this because I just got a news alert saying he won the vote and is also reappointed.

Great job Tenn Leg. You played yourself.

Next step for the GOP in TN is to make sure to pass a law stating that if removed from the legislature only a white christian republican male can appoint another white christian republican male to the open seat.

I would love to be joking, but it is coming and I do not think the dems have the power to stop it.

Still more grifting from another Tennessee right-wing Republican!

Nine years ago, Rep. Andy Ogles, who was elected to the House last year, raised $23,000 to create a cemetery for stillborn babies. The cemetery was never built. The first time a media outlet questioned him about where the money went, he refused to answer. Later on -- after taking time to think up a story? -- he released a statement claiming that he used it to pay for burials for other families. He presented "corroboration" not from any of these families, but from a political ally who -- surprise! -- had to pay nearly $8 million a few years back to settle fraud claims against him.

Oh, and he also lied on his resume. So maybe this should have gone in the Santos thread?

Oh, they are. Back in 2020, several members of the state legislature were raided by the FBI for things like taking bribes and they barely said anything. Thanks to gerrymandering they didn’t have to worry about losing any seats in last year’s elections, so why should they?

Now, the whole goddamned planet is watching and laughing at us. They’re shitting their pants over this. There’s been comments in recent months that Ford (who’s building an electric vehicle factory in TN) isn’t happy with some of the shit the assembly’s been doing and that’s making some in the state GOP nervous.

Ford’s too far along to pull out but they can still scale back their plans.

    Which home?

The $600k Nashville home an anonymous trust he controls purchased and he and his family live in (his kids go to Nashville schools) or the one he claims he lives in back in his district both so he can continue to represent the district AND collect $92k in per diem ‘traveling’ back and forth?

oh there's this whole other story about them fucking over black farmers to get their land for Ford. Like deeply profoundly undervaluing the property.

And I think that Ford's also raised issues about that. I could be wrong.

    Good listen:

    Democratic Decline in Tennessee

Early this month, the Republican supermajority in the Tennessee House of Representatives voted to expel two Democratic lawmakers who had participated in a protest against gun violence on the House floor. The GOP also narrowly failed to expel a third Democrat.

The two legislators who were expelled, Reps. Justin Pearson and Justin Jones, have now returned to the House. But the incident turned national attention on Tennessee’s struggling democracy. To discuss, Lawfare Senior Editor Quinta Jurecic spoke with Samar Ali, Research Professor of Political Science and Law at Vanderbilt University and Co-Chair of Vanderbilt’s Project on Unity & American Democracy, and Sekou Franklin, Professor of Political Science at Middle Tennessee State University, and the author—with Ray Block—of the book “Losing Power: African Americans and Racial Polarization in Tennessee Politics.” They explained how the expulsions should be understood as part of a larger process of democratic backsliding and misgovernment in Tennessee, and how that backsliding is itself part of a larger trend of democratic erosion at the subnational as well as the national level.

Point that was made that I wasn’t aware of is that ‘she was expelled because she was white’ narrative isn’t as clear cut.

While the Justins represented themselves in the Expulsion hearings Johnson came in with two high power attorneys BOTH prior members of the legislature.

So yeah. We can all relax. It likely wasn’t JUST that she was white. It was at least in part because she had the resources and connections to get effective representation.

So we can all rest easy knowing racism isn’t a thing.
