Dixie = Miss, Miss Mess, Miss Piss, Dixters, Doodlehead (all of which she responds to) Buddy = Buddy Cat, Li'l Bud (she also comes when she's called) My cats have always known their names (and nicknames). I've always trained them, from kittenhood (using treats, then switching to affection reward) to come when called. Now, they don't always actually get up and come to me. But they at least look at me from their comfortable position in a sunbeam, twitch an ear and start to purr.
Back when I lived with cats and dogs, they all had different names, depending on my mood. Cat, caaaaat!, CAT!, cattt... and Dog, doog!, DOG!, dawg
Tiger responds to "baby" sometimes. He comes if I say "Come here kitty!" in an unbearably cute voice and stand within 10 feet of his snacks.

When I was younger my folks had a 10-pound toy poodle named Gigi. Dad's inevitable sense of irony caused him to nickname her "Fang."

George = Georgie, Porgie, Puddin, Kypros, Kippers, Picks, Pickings For some ancient reason that I can't remember, OH and I always refer to dogs as 'pickings' or 'picks' in private conversations. It's only embarrassing when you use the term to people who haven't got a clue what you're referring to. Kypros/Kippers comes from an episode of The Weakest Link, shown during George's puppihood. A little chap called Kypros got voted off and generally made fun of for being a bit thick. When George did something daft we'd call him Kypros, and it stuck.
I've referred to Dixie as a doglet from when she was a puppy, and her little puppy tail curled over on itself like a little piggy tail.... or piglet tail..... so i decided she was a mix between a dog and a piglet, and therefore a doglet.
My best reason for an obscure nickname is for Coleman. Coleman has a rare talent of absolutely disappearing when ever there is a storm. If there's thunder, then he's gone with a puff of smoke (hence the nick, "Ninja Kitty"...but that's not the one this is about.) When I lived in Knoxville, we rented a house that had ceiling panels downstairs, and some were either missing or had holes in them. Well, my sister and brother-in-law had come over, and then there was a violent storm. It was over shortly, and we went around trying to find Coleman because we weren't sure if he'd gotten out or not. So me and my bro-in-law were downstairs when we heard a strange noise. Then, suddenly one of the older ceiling panels gave way, and Coleman fell out onto the ground. My Bro-in-law started screaming, "They're In The Ceiling!!!!!!!" So that's how Coleman got the nick, "Aliens".
