I had a near-tragedy today. I spilled a coke right on top of the keypad of my Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop. After the "oh HELL!" moment, I quickly cleaned up as much as possible, but at least 1 cup of liquid was involved in the mishap. I shut down the computer thinking it would never be turned on again. Much to my surprise, after XP ran the disk checks (something about a dirty disk), it is working fine now. Woo hoo!
Electrical stuff is more often ok after getting wet/dirty than most people imagine. Just turn it off fast and allow it a long time to dry out and it should be ok
Hmm... I hesitate to suggest this with a laptop, but you may need to throw the bastard in a tub of water. As that Coke starts drying up, you may start having problems with your keys. Take the battery out and soak the bitch in some water (and then give it forever to dry out) and you should be fine.* Like Dan said, if there is no power, water shouldn't hurt electronics. *Of course there's always the CMOS battery. And if there are any cardboard or other paper parts in the case, that could be...problematic.
My PS2 got soaked through in an accident involving my dogs, a full laundry bucket of rainwater, and a leaky ceiling, and I put it on the dryer tray for a cycle and it was good as new.
