Not sure if this belongs in here or labs or gold, but do some outboard (i.e. non -pc) DVD players playback .avi's or .mpg's?. Some seem to say 'multi-format' but what exactly does that cover?
http://content.msn.co.in/Technology/TechnologyTT_280307_1154.htm This is the one I have Dan. Not sure why the story has a date of March 28, 2007 on it, as I got it for Christmas. You can pretty much burn AVI files on a blank DVD and they play perfectly. It gives you the option of stretching the screen to 16:9 as well. My only complaint about it is some AVI files are encoded with lowered volume, so if you are someplace noisy, like a gym, the volume at full blast is JUST adequate enough for you to hear what they are saying. On regular DVD, it works perfectly, and of course, it can play MPG, MP3's, and I think even WMAs. Also, even if it is off, for some reason the battery still drains. Not sure if this is just mine or all of them are like that, so I usually seperate the battery from the player when I'm not using it. I'm off to use it right now in fact.
Lots of players support mpeg 4 (divx, xvid etc) videohelp.com has a list where you can do a search on what features you want. There's a nice pioneer model in the UK that's also multi region.
So, Dan, which is it you want to burn and watch, illegally downloaded TV shows/movies or internet porno vids?
Illegally downloaded shows mainly. I need to get a DVD player anyway, i miight as well get one that will play BSG season 3 on it Ill still buy the DVD's when they come out but i want something to watch in the meantime
I recently bought a DVD player because the DVD playback in my PS2 kicked the bucket. Found a stack of them at my record store and bought one for $50 after bringing it home I found out it could play pretty much any format of video and much to my delight MP3 format discs (the burn process that uses the MB rather than minutes to calculate space which can store upwards of 8 hours of music). I was impressed at the value for the price.
I love my new one....reads mp3's burned to dvds and cds - file not audio - and translate them to surround sound.
I got a multi-region dvd player for Steph that plays pretty much every format you can throw at it, for AUS$40. (so around US$30)
The problem with that is you have to use 4 DVDs for one season worth of shows. Why use 4 when you can use 1?
