For non-lawyers:

Normally, when someone sues someone else, there needs to be a connection between where the suit is filed and where either the person suing, the person being sued or the place where the injury supposedly occurred. It would be unfair to the parties and to the court itself if Party A lives in Iowa, Party B lives in Florida, the car accident that happened occurred in Massachusetts but suit is filed in California. California has nothing to do with it, so why should California have to spend its resources adjudicating the lawsuit, and why should California law possibly apply?

In this case, having not read the complaint, but assuming it to be something along the lines of defamation/tortious interference with contract, the alleged injury could be said to have happened anywhere the Internet is, because someone in Peoria or Dogpatch or wherever could have read the defamatory words of Media Matters.

But instead of suing where X is headquartered or registered, or where Media Matters is headquartered, X attorneys went out of their way to avoid the relatively liberal federal courts there and to sue in what has to be one of the more conservative federal courts, Texas.

Hopefully, Media Matters will successfully move for a change of venue back to DC.
