Mastodon's user base has been increasing exponentially since Musk's takeover of Twitter. Given their decentralized model, some of the servers may not be able handle the load. This is one of the downsides of decentralization.

But, one of the upsides to decentralization is that if a bunch of Nazi wingnuts set up their own server, the rest of the Mastodon community can completely cut that server out.
