When I think of the biggest Cold Warriors of the 20th century, I'm thinking mostly of liberal Democrats. Kennedy, Johnson, Truman. Reagan is the exception.

What? Eisenhower was huge into containment and started our involvement in Vietnam while Nixon started out as a red baiter in Congress working with Joe McCarthy where he was a founding member of the house unAmerican activities commission accusing everyone he didn't of being a secret communist spy.

The only Republican President who wasn't an archetype cold warrior was Ford.

Eisenhower also openly threatened the Chinese (and Soviets) with nuclear weapons unless the Korean War was ended. And basically made the U.S. defense policy dependent upon the use of nuclear weapons

Of course this was more for budget reasons than anything as building and maintaining a deliverable nuclear arsenal was much, much cheaper than a couple of million extra conventional troops and their kit.
