He won 70% of the delegate votes at the Republican National Convention.

The Republican House and Senate have been in lockstep with almost every decision he has made.

I doubt any major Republican office holder in the United States if left to his own devices would choose Donald Trump as their standard bearer.

But they all did. He is the standard bearer and they all support it. They did nothing. The Republicans didn't fight against him at all. Jeb! rolled over and played dead for Trump.

He said John McCain was a loser and McCain still supported him. He made crazy claims about the father of Ted Cruz. Yet Cruz is still backing him to this day. He sparred continuously with Paul Ryan and now not a peep out of Ryan about anything Trump has done.

They might have waffled here and there but none of them took a firm stand against him except for maybe Kasich. Even Romney eventually rolled over and allowed himself to be Trump's dog.

What would a "firm stand against Trump" by the Republicans take the form of?

As far as I know the majority of Trumps actual policies are in line with what most of the GOP has supported.

So, he walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and tries to disenfranchise the poor and swarthy in a generally duck-like fashion, but you were still trying to argue that in some fashion he is not actually a small aquatic bird of the genus Anatidae?

After WWII, the warmongers got Truman's ear right quick and he got rid of people like Henry Wallace who wanted to beat swords into ploughsharers. The Korean War sealed the deal and the US simply stayed on a war footing. Well that's impossible without a bogeyman. And Stalin sure fit the bill. This served nicely until the USSR fell apart. Then the US switched to Saddam Hussein and various lesser dastards.

Putin isn't exactly my choice for the person I'd most like to be stranded on a desert island with, but he'll do to keep the military/industrial complex going. Donald or no Donald. If necessary, they'll find somebody else -- Kim, whoever.

I think it's supposed to be some kind of insult, as if putting quotes around their names takes away any authority because they can't prove who they claim to be. I don't know, it's Dayton. I probably just put more effort into figuring it out than he did creating it.
