So... What's the intended goal here?

For people who complain of "thought crimes" and the "thought police," conservatives sure do spend a lot o effort implementing stuff a lot like it... and it's not lost on me that the same governor who wants to “to ensure” that students are presented “diverse idea and opinion, including those that they may disagree with or find uncomfortable,” signed a bill prohibiting the teaching of critical race theory just last week because too many people might disagree with it or find it uncomfortable.

    Cuz conservatives are liars.
To the marrow of their bones.
Look at all the "libertarians" here that pulled the lever for Trump twice.
Look how many licked police boots during the Portland protests.

There's got to be a way to offer any curriculum without allowing any one instructor to hold a student's academic career hostage until they demonstrate alignment with one political view.

forced indoctrination for the win on the right. We have to keep filing their heads with lies, and we just can't do that when they see and experience things in reality.

Surely this is a freedom of speech violation?

If one has the right to express their views surely they also have the right to, well, not express them.

Yeah, unsurprisingly, I have a big issue with this whole thing. It's a miniature version of "if you see something, say something," because the whole idea is to report professors who don't toe a conservative viewpoint, as well as students who hold viewpoints that might need them to be monitored (there are conflicting reports as to whether personally indentifiable information will be gathered regarding the students). It's not at all a leap, given the US' past history of political suppression, where they're aiming with this.

I wish colleges were bastions of socialist thought, but they're not. We've moved so far to the right in this country that basic ideas of "maybe brown people shouldn't die so we can take their oil" is suddenly a communist plot. Hell, if Joe Biden were half the socialist the GOP and conservatives think he is, I'd have been like "fuck, give me that ballot." Well, not really, I have other reasons I don't like Biden, but you get the idea.

Did you ever actually go to college/university? Your post comes off as someone who has bought into right wing talking points about some far left takeover of them.

= "being held hostage until they demonstrate alignment with one political view" in conservative newspeak.

"Say, you don't wanna murder blacks do you? :calli:".

I've often had the fanciful notion that Colonel Flagg was the GOP in human form:

Colonel Flagg: "This won't look good on your record."
Frank Burns: "But Colonel, it's just Reader's Digest."
Colonel Flagg: "Not if you eliminate the third, fifth, and sixth letters, then it's Red's Digest, comrade."

My college life was mostly in the sciences, but I have a hard time believing the hype about the liberal indoctrination that conservatives complain about.

So do you think this type of heavy handed government intervention is the answer? What happens when the conservative government sees an abundance of faculty and students at one school or another? What do they do with that data? What intervention is reasonable IYHO?

I was thinking more of the 4th amendment. Certainly the mandate here is an unreasonable search and/or seizure of information? I mean… what are they going to do with that info? Defund the school? Disenfranchise the student? Fire the faculty member? This is seriously fucked up!

DeSantis is running for President. So everything has to be run through the lens of the Republican Party’s egocentric victimhood.

I graduated from a FL state university and there was only one course in four years that required you to state any political opinions. And you weren’t graded on the opinions. This is more unpatriotic garbage from DeSantis. Agree about the 4th amendment violation.

    Or as clumsy strawmen.

I've never seen left-wing politics pushed during my university studies OR as a university lecturer. Am I left-wing? Yes. There's some truth to the adage that reality has a left-wing bias. But no-one pushed me to that. Hell, the only time I got marked down on an assignment because of a lecturer's bias was an ethics essay on IVF and the lecturer was a lay preacher and obviously hated the use of non-"dick in hole between married partners" zapping of the egg.

Yep, this is intended as free political advertising for the DeSantis campaign. The problem of course is the conservative base is monstrously stupid and completely unprincipled, so it works.

    Hi UA.

No way this survives court challenge, and DeSantis knows it.

But it gets him on the radar with his base, gets his name in the mouths of Faux and other conservative media, and makes the base think he's fighting those evil liberals, because any sacrifice no matter how great is necessary to stop them from aborting live babies three months after birth.

FFS. It is possible to be completely responsible for your own actions, yet still want a society with social safety nets. Individually, each person can be responsible for themselves, yet still be able to draw from a pool of resources if need be.

Totally not shocking that the party that's been nothing but lies and projection since, at least, WW2 is selling itself as the Party of Liberty and, when in power, governing like a good old fashioned Fascist party.

And don't @ me - state dictating - literally - what is appropriate thought and speech and what the state forbids is exactly that, or worse.

Sometimes colleges do not do themselves any favors cleaning up after the whitewash of american schools. We really have to get rid of the whitewashed history of grade schools. Because this leads to courses in college where you have to have the rest of reality put in. That seems like a waste of fucking time for most people in that position. I get there is a purpose, but when you are in one of these diversity classes and you are paying large sums of money for this education, it really becomes a WTF moment with college.

I remember having to take one of these cultural studies courses in college. It fell in every education path, and the teacher was poorly informed. Though it was filling in some areas high school history left out because of the racist bullshit of public school textbooks and teachers, it seemed like a propaganda class. It really was a racist class because it was giving you a bunch of information you did not get because of racism.

At the time I did not hate black people at all, but I was resentful I had to take this bullshit course. It had nothing to do with my desire to learn in my major, and the teacher they found was very lacking in intelligence and preparation. We had a speaker on campus he forced us to see and write a paper on her presentation on welfare. However, she was all about the racism of welfare and how it was a trap, and he did not agree with any of that so he tried to cancel the paper we all had to write. Know your material at least. The black and white students in the class were in complete agreement this was not fully covering what it needed to, and the pass fail bullshit requirement was expensive to have to take.

It was just one of the reasons I hate the american college system. Really, we should be having this stuff taught in grade school. Not having ever mentioned juneteenth during black history month is a god damned crime. Black history month was MLK, abagail addams, and that was it. We never even got into the good stuff with MLK. We listened to one of his speeches and that was it. There would have been far more use in analyzing the writings of MLK in english class than reading Oridinary people. That book was so boring I wanted to shoot myself. King's writing is inspiring and heartfelt.

Here's a Rolling Stone piece that focuses on the 1A aspect of the new legislation, but until a specific action is taken to intervene based on the opinions gathered, I think a 4A violation is the main thing to be concerned about. @Raoul the Red Shirt? Do you have an opinion on this?

Maybe it is just that I am not yet caffeinated yet, but I am not seeing the Fourth Amendment implications of this.

I don't see issuing a survey as something that is "unreasonable" on its face. Presumably, any non-employee could just refuse to respond. Government employees have fewer rights in that regard, as at least arguably, as part of their employment they agree to some level of compliance.

Also, the rights guaranteed by the Fourth Amendment are as to your own person and your physical property. The right to speak or refrain from speaking all are based in the 1st Amendment.

Other than that, most of what I'd have to say is probably what has already been said: this is DeSantis trying to set himself up with his base. Whatever the survey says will be used to justify the "conservative/Christian/white people's views are under attack at our universities" narratives at a minimum and possibly lead to more than just wailing and gnashing of teeth.
