What are the current good ones? I know that FS X is coming but I ain't buyin' a DX10 card until they are at mainstream prices and don't suck 200 watts. And what about military ones? I'm kinda out of the loop but in the past I really ebjoyed FALCON 4. Any advice on newer ones?

I'm trying Falcon 4, but Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ.

I demand a lot from a flight sim and maybe this one has gone just a little over the top. I have all the realism settings turned up, but it takes almost 30 gorram minutes to go from cold engine to hold short.

It really is, but I'm still a naval sim guy.

I'm still in love with Silent Hunter III after all this time and I'm eagerly waiting on Silent Hunter IV.

US Fleet Boats in the pacific goin' after the Japs.

Edit: Dan, I know you play SHIII. I set my own personal record the other day. 12 torps fired. One BB and six DDs on the bottom and one BB crippled and limping away at 6 knots.

I like MS Combat Flight Simulator, especially messing around with the advanced stuff.

Just pissed there's no B-17 in it.

Best patrol is 16 ships, 4 airplanes, - 3 destroyers and the rest c3, c2 cargo and 2 c3 tankers. about 56% realism (i hate dud torps, cant play with them  )
Had a boring no-show patrol then came across a large convoy at the mouth of the english channel as im heading back to st nazaire (sp?). I took out the 3 destroyers guarding it (the third one was a bit of a shock) then pummelled the fleet with deck gun before switching to torps, i used every ounce of ammo on my boat :D i even manned and fired the AA guns at the cargo on the decks to cause extra fires :)

I did that one time and it ended...badly.

I jumped a convoy off the Grand Banks. I just wanted to tear into the merchants so I popped the southern escort and got in close, actually inside the convoy. I was happier than a tornado in a trailer park.

I managed to get in several good hits before the remaining escorts showed up. When I spun the periscope around and saw a destroyer charging in I figured it was time to go, so I went deep and cleared datum. But, the long of the short is that there were a few hits that weren't good. I crippled several ships and they started falling behind the rest of the convoy as the convoy turned north to get away from me. I thought, "Great, I'll stay deep, let 'em fall way behind, and come up and finish them off."

I wasn't exactly sure how many were left so I sank them as I came to them. I think there were two or three C2 cargo ships and a couple of Tankers, but then I spotted big daddy. A crippled Troop Transport, and I was all out of torpedoes and ammo for my deck gun.

    :sob:

I manned the AA guns and poured every round I had into her. At this point I was so unbelievably pissed off that, well, I did the unthinkable.

    "All ahead, flank!"

I put my bow into that bitch's side at about 16 knots and I just bounced off.

    :sob:

Ive tried a few times to finish off badly damaged ships by hitting them, usualy slow rather than flank ;) The reason i try is while i was round at a mates house when he was playing he finished off a coastal merchant by surfacing under it by accident :techman:

In the old Silent Service II I once found myself right in front of a Japanese battle fleet...two battleships and a carrier and a bunch of lesser warships.

I was right smack in the middle as they came rumbling past, with the carrier on my bow and a battleship passing to stern. Total dream shot - fired all six bow torpedoes into the carrier and all four stern tubes into the battleship. Then went deep as the whole bloody Japanese Navy came after me.

Took out the carrier, slid up to the battleship and popped two more torpedoes into her from the stern tubes and three more from the bow tubes into a cruiser, then things started getting interesting...

They got me in the end but I had a hell of an honor guard into the afterlife and a statue on the Capitol Mall, no doubt...

OK, I have obtained CFS 3 and a new joystick (oh joy, no Force Feedback under Vista yet )

These things are hard to fly :soma: And how the hell do you aim a dumb bomb when you're not shaving off treetops in low level flight anyway? Any other way than trial and error? I have been spoiled by Paveways and the like...

Also found out that FS X does work without a DX10 card. I'll have to go buy like a good little lemming. Time to get the second monitor from the basement.

I stay away from the bombers, but with the fighters you just point your nose at the target and work out the ballistics in your head. Divebombing is an art. :) Never did figure out the bombardier stuff from the bombers.

Dive bombing is a good way to shoot yourself down if you drop a thousand pounder on a target and you are a bit too low.

In the German fighter pilot campaign you can take a Focke-Wulf and use torpedos on ships. That's a lot of fun.

If you're ever in the player vs. player area, say hi - I'm Mal Reynolds.

Yes, ma'am. Slow to climb, slow to turn, and just slow to fly. The only thing thing they do quickly is dive and you can fuck that up in a hurry.

Like you, I'm used to shouting out, "Chevy One, Fox Three!", pickling an AMRAAM, and jumping into a high-g turn on burner.

Yeah, but in an F-15 you feel almost guilty shooting down an ME-262.

In a Spitfire, now, you've accomplished something and when you land the girls and drinks at the pub are free. :diacanu:
