Maybe they are evolving!? This set of miniseries on TLC a few years back ("The Future Is Wild" 1 & 2) that speculated on some possible viable evolutionary paths future life life could take - one was descendant of modern flying fish that could really fly long distances (but more like an insect did) only had to return water to mate.
I get the fact that they glide, but wouldn't they have to get up to a certain height in the first place? Flying Squirrels glide too, but they start out the glide by jumping from a tree - cheaters!
