Moderators: How about removing the Sticky tag from last season's football thread. Any post in that thread would go to the top of the forum, and nobody wants that. We can keep a thread floating for a while. - David Bentley has withdrawn from the under 21's. He's not injured, just tired. David Beckham has started tonight's match for Real Madrid at Real Zaragoza. The England National Team will donate their earnings to charity. They intend to raise 10 million pounds by the 2010 World Cup. Gordon Strachan wants Celtic and Rangers to play in a European league.
Yeah, good idea, certainly no need to keep that thread as a sticky now. Kudos to the England boys for giving up their England bonuses. Although considering these guys are earning up to £150,000 p/w from their club salaries alone, giving up a maximum amount of £1500 isn't much. But it's still a sound thing to do in principal.
I'm here, and I think Flow's busy, so I'll unsticky... Bentley has destroyed any hopes of a regular England career, IMHO...
Bentley is getting some bad advice. What England manager is going to take him? Beckham limped through Real's match tonight. Reports say he didn't play that well. With one match remaining, Real are in first place; level on points with Barcelona, and two points ahead of Sevilla.
Bentley has little argument, when you consider he was selected as one of the overage Under 21's in the first place. He's useful, but he's not all that.
i can see him leaving next season when his contracts up, losing david dein has been a big loss for arsenal.
Yes, but as a Spurs fan I believe it's time for..... :slice: I don't think it's unreasonable to say now that we've got a chance of finishing in fourth, especially if Wenger also goes and we make a few more Berbatov style quality signings.
the sight of a spurs fans hopes getting up, before the inevitable crushing by reality is sooooooo cute looking like city have got sven, which i'm not sure its going to be good for them - i have to say, the prospect of city getting relegated with sven at the helm would make me
I can't wait for Whining Wenger to go. Not after a season where he picked a fight with a record 436 different managers. Or so it felt. Surprising what one can see when you use your EYES isn't it, Arsey?
that was some time back, and he wasn't dealing with a club struggling in a competitive league like the premiership. he's also going to find it difficult to attract the best players straight away - they'll need a measure of success before the glory hunters head their way. the cash hunters on the other hand... i really can't see sven succeeding, i'm thinking he wants a big payday before he swans off into retirement
You would do, because their clubs are more threat to Liverpool, than the stripping-down of Arsenal! So, the insanity continues at Real Madrid. Capello sacked after winning the title, primarily for his 'style of play' not being attacking (he's won league titles with every club he's managed). Who's in next, and more importantly, how long will that one last? Also, Spurs ready to shell out £17m (or 5.6 Marlon Harewoods) for Darren Bent to add to the pile of strikers they have in the cupboard gathering dust. So, Fat Mido on the way out, and Defoe up for auction to Pompey?
Bent to Spurs for £16.5 mill. Good player, could be good for spurs, hell of a payday for championship charlton, that could mean the difference between mid table and promotion for them. Ipswich get 20%, £3 mill+, thats a good payday for them as well
Mixed feelings about this. His goal tally speaks for itself, but he's not proven to be the complete players. That said, if he feeds well off of Berbatov it could nonetheless work. Time for some serious squad rotation me thinks.
Looks like Torres will go to 'Pool for 26 million (damn theres some big transfer fees this year) with Shabby Alonso going in the other direction. Anyone know what that guy is supposed to be like?
I've seen Torres play some blinders in Champions League matches, but on the other hand, I've seen a fair few where he's been anonymous. He's got quite a lot of experience for a 23 year old, with over 200 league matches fro Atletico & something like 50 caps for Spain. He's far from a prolific striker, but there's more to his game than that. The problem is with the price tag. No Spaniards have really made a huge impression in the EPL to date, so it's a bit of a gamble, to be honest. Liverpool have also been linked to Man Utd's Gabby Heinze.
Oh, and it's Luis Garcia who will be goin in the opposite direction. Alonso is quite a bit better than Garcia, and I doubt few Reds fans will really miss Garcia.
I'll miss him, and so will lots of Reds. He's provided so many quality moments against top class teams. 2 winners against Chelsea in key cup games, winner against Arsenal (when they were decent), a spectacular winner against Juventus etc. He was an infuriating bastard for much of the time, trying tricks that rarely came off but he's also one of the very few players we have that can make things happen, providing that bit of magic to break a dull deadlock. Hope he sticks around, the good news is that his moving to Athletico isn't dependent on the Torres deal, so there's a chance little Luis will stay. As for Torres...he's quality, no doubt about that. He scored several goals in the world cup and has a reasonable strike rate in la liga. But he's so fecking pricey, for that amount we could probably buy David Villa or Eto'o (if they'd come), who are a lot better IMO. We already had one expensive Spanish striker who couldn't cut it in the Premiership (Morientes), it would be a disaster of epic proportions if Torres fails too. Fingers crossed that he'll succeed though...
I'm sure you're willing to admit, even as a loyal Reds fan, that he has had two extremely moderate back-to-back seasons, and hasn't truly settled as well as was hoped? Besides, if it means a player of Torres' potential calibre is going in the opposite direction, I would imagine you wouldn't be that worried about seing him go, either?
Well, we've lost Cureton and Iwelumo, plus various other bods, but we've signed Sheringham. There's been much wailing and gnashing of teeth at cu-fc chat at the departures, but I can't help feeling that said individuals will find that they've made as much of a career move as Neil Danns did. George has a talent for getting the best out of players who then struggle in other set-ups. After last season exceeded expectations so much, I'm not making any predictions for this year, all I do is hope, fervently, that we don't do a Luton...
