Out at Sam's club the other day, picking up some soda, and like usual, I browsed through the DVD aisle. There on the shelf, was a Warner Brothers Errol Flynn Box set (vol. 2) with five movies in it, including the classic The Dawn Patrol starring Flynn along with Basil Rathbone and David Niven. I thought maybe this movie would never see release on DVD, but it's here! These aren't bare bones discs either, they all have the Warner's Night at the Movies feature, with previews and newsreels, cartoons and shorts. Some of the pics have commentary tracks by film historians too. The other films in this set include: The Adventures of Don Juan. Dive Bomber, The Charge of the Light Brigade and Gentleman Jim. Still waiting on some of Flynn's WWII pics with Ronald Reagan, like Dangerous Journey, or even the Reagan-less Northern Pursuit.
Re: For everyone who saw the ads for "Flyboys" and wanted to see a good WWI Fighter m Both Dawn Patrol and Hell's Angels are fanTAStic films. I can tell they're miles better than Flyboys, and I haven't even SEEN Flyboys. I'll probably rent it when I'm on vacation in June, just because I'm a plane freak and I must be a completist.
Re: For everyone who saw the ads for "Flyboys" and wanted to see a good WWI Fighter m I like the part where Flynn and the guys are drinking with the downed German pilot, and one of rookies loses it, he doesn't get that when they're on the ground, and no one's shooting at each other, they just see him as another pilot, kind of like sailors being willing to pull enemies out of the drink 'cause once their ship went under, they saw them as fellow sailors. And if Flynn and Niven aren't the models for Hawkeye and Trapper John, I'd be very surprised.
