This is despite the fact that you know I can't possibly have an ammo box filled with high-powered charges. I don't care how you spend $28 million on feeding babies, even if all of it is wasted, it cannot possibly compare to the kind of damage that SCOTUS has done by striping the SEC of their oversight ability.

Seriously, how does blocking $28 million on baby formula even remotely compare to stripping the SEC of their power? Do you not remember what happened in '08 as a result of policies that were put in place in the 90s when it came to regulating financial markets? How da fuq does killing Glass-Steagall Act even remotely resemble pissing away $28 million by the Feds?

I wonder why the party that is trying to force women to have babies is now voting against being able to feed those babies. Hmmmmm. It must have nothing to do with the babies at all.

God didn't bless you with an abundance of reading comprehension, did she? SCOTUS hasn't heard the SEC case. This was one judge on the 5th circuit. And wondering if money is being well-spent or will just make the situation worse (in this case, only before more effective measures kick in) is always legitimate.

I'm trying so very, very hard to see how this could possibly be anything but whataboutism. The only interpretation I can come up with is you think everything the Democrats do between now and November is sacrosanct and above reproach or even questioning. To which I say, no it's not, fuck that, and fuck you. :finger:

If SCOTUS votes to overturn that, I'll be happy as a fucking clam. I am not willing to lay money that this will actually happen, however. You got evidence that indicates this SCOTUS will overturn the Fifth Circuit in this matter, bring it the fuck on. I could use some good news right now.

Says the guy who went all Godwin. Come on, dude, you're smarter than this. You're saying that we ought to be concerned that a small fraction of the money the government spends on any number of other programs is more important than a shitload of other things. Really? Dude, look around you. The GQP is doing everything that they possibly can to obstruct the investigation into what happened with the insurrection and you think that they might have hit upon an instance where the government is blowing what's a rounding error for what the government routinely spends on hammers or other shit, and that blocking it is okay. If this also happens to prevent Democrats from maintaining the same majority they have in Congress now, it's worth it. You know, since it'd save tax payers a few pennies. The average taxpayer in the US spends less than $1 to fund NASA. The budget for NASA is $24 billion. Some part of that is going to be pissed away on stupid shit. I don't see you asking in the various threads about what NASA is doing, bitching about Boeing's failures. Why is that?

SpaceX has managed to not only put humans in orbit, but to also send humans and supplies to the ISS. Where's your callout that NASA is blowing billions on propping up Boeing, despite the fact that they haven't been able to match what SpaceX is doing? It ain't the Soviet Union invoking what the US did in the 19th Century to justify what the USSR did in Afghanistan. I'm talking about shit in the here-and-now. If NASA is wrong to give money to Boeing (and I am fucking firmly in that camp), then you ought to be calling out any number of government agencies who throw around far more money for something that is a piddling amount of waste compared to this shit. But you don't.

What makes the $28 million Congress wants to spend on baby formula more important than the billions NASA is blowing on Boeing's Starliner? I'll wait. NASA has spent at least $30 million on the Voyager program since the last planetary flyby. Both of us will say, I'm certain, that this is money well-spent, even though the odds of it making the lives of people on Earth better are pretty slim. So what makes the idea of Congress spending roughly the same amount on baby formula bad? If we managed to wind up in the same kind of situation described in The Martian, I'm sure that you'd be cool with ignoring the dollar cost of the operation in order to save Watney, despite the fact that this might eat into the budget of other things NASA wanted to do. And hey, given that we're on the verge of civil fucking war, I can't see how trying to get food to babies is a bad thing, given that we're happily handing over billions of dollars to Ukraine.

I think we both can agree that some percentage of the money given to Ukraine by a shitload of countries is going to be wasted. Maybe they end up with a bunch of ammunition for M-16s, when they really need ammo for AKs. Are you going to say, "Whelp, we shouldn't send them ammo" or are you going to advocate for getting them the right ammo for their AKs. :chris:

I expect the rest of the 5th circuit to overturn it en banc, in fact. But quit deflecting and own up to the fact you got this wrong. You used the past tense. Only possible if you didn't bother to more than glance at what happened.

Nope. Just that we should be concerned about this too. Formula is the topic of this thread. Sorry you want every thread to be about whatever you think the most pressing problem of the day is; get used to disappointment.
Well for one thing, that's not in the Red Room. Wait wait, let me guess...
    :dayton:

For another thing, spending billions on Starliner doesn't have a chance of making the formula shortage worse. You know what happens if this makes it worse in those states? Democrats lose votes in those states. Do you want Democrats to lose votes in those states? No? Me neither. If it does, that Swallwell tweet or something like it will end up in every local Republican's commercial. ALL I'm asking is, "hey, this is actually not going to backfire and make things worse, right? Since there's an actual shortage, not just a distribution problem (at least within the country), seems like it might be worth making sure it's doing no worse than being a waste."

Of course, as you've pointed out, this bill isn't going to pass the Senate anyway. So it's just grandstanding. You'd actually have a stronger argument saying that Democratic grandstanding sans action (since that can't make the formula shortage worse) is sacrosanct and above reproach or questioning until November. If it actually worked, which you'd have to show your work on. I don't think it does. But no, you're just doubling down on the whataboutism.

How many times do I have to say, "it's not about the money"? It's about what it's doing. If it will actually help, I wouldn't care if it was $280 million or $2.8 billion. But if it's directed badly, it could just make it harder for potential Democratic voters to get formula. That is all I want to know isn't going to happen. A link to the bill's text, or even a bill number or name, would be a good start, and then we could evaluate the merits. But no, you'd rather go on a moralistic crusade about how I'm not angry enough about other waste. GTFO with that shit.

Okay, it is all whataboutism. Fine, whatever, but you're impressing only one person. Grab a tissue and wash your hands after you're done.

The program is not responsible for badly managed corporations. This is another step in the advancement of ensuring a large population of poor people - they keep the focus off the “white collar” criminals and their desperation keeps wages low.

And you don't think that it will be appealed to SCOTUS? How do you think that they will rule?

Got what wrong? That the idea of giving food to babies is important?

Really? Okay, I'll bite: Show me where you've complained about such things in the past 14 days.

And you're the guy who said that the government spending $28 million on that is Nazism. Not sure what kind of high ground you think that you've claimed here, but I can't see how trying to prevent babies from starving is the equivalent to killing on an industrial scale.

Says the guy who equated trying to figure out how to get food to babies in 2022 is the same as what happened in Germany some 80+ years ago.
Let's see here, I'm a mod who has control over Techforge and The Help Desk. You're an Admin who not only has more control over things than me, but is also necessary to keep the board running (as our recent outages have confirmed). If you want to call Starliner the biggest fucking piece of shit in Techforge, fuck all I can do about it. (Mind you, I wouldn't necessarily disagree with your assessment, were that to be the case, but that's another story.) The simple fact is, you've opted to equate spending $28 million on baby formula with Nazism. WTF, dude? Seriously. How does wanting to make sure that babies have food make one a Nazi?

You get that Republicans have happily voted against various programs and then campaigned upon the fact that their districts are now benefitting from the various programs they voted against, right? We're talking about programs that involve billions of dollars, if not the $1+ trillion dollar stuff that got passed after Biden took office. You're somehow thinking that a program that involves $28 million will be wildly different than those other programs, because why?

Holy shit, dude, do you not grasp the fact that grandstanding is what got the Republicans to the point where we are now? All the Benghazi hearings that Congress had were grandstanding and they were enough to get Trump elected in 2016. You're arguing that grandstanding is pointless because why? It got the single largest threat to our democracy since at least the Civil War, if not the founding of this nation, into the White House. But we shouldn't do it because reasons?

Great, now show me where you've complained in the last 14 days about where the government is spending it's money, and how that if it is wasting it, this is the same as Nazism. Because that's what you fucking did over the idea of the government spending $28 million on formula.

Please link me to your comments asking the same about the money we're sending to Ukraine. I mean, I honestly don't care how voters think about the US sending money to Ukraine, I'm all the fuck for it. It'd be nice if they agreed that this is the kind of thing that we should do, but regardless, I'm not going to bitch if some of the billions we're sending to Ukraine gets wasted.

Okay, point to me where you've complained about the fact that nobody's linked to the bills for sending money and weapons to Ukraine. I've missed them. We both agree that Ukraine needs money and weapons to fight the Russians, I'm sure. So show me where you've asked for information about how the billions we're sending to Ukraine are going to be spent.

I accept your surrender. You think that sending money to Ukraine (which is important) doesn't require any kind of oversight, but spending a fraction on feeding babies in the US requires far more oversight because feeding babies leads to Nazism if you're not careful. Got it.

As I thought, whenever a crisis like this emerges you have a compliant media willing to place blame on government/government programs and hold the mega-corporations harmless. What a modern tragedy that poor babies might have access to formula first.

Back at the beginning of the year the shelf was stocked full of formula. But once again, the senior level geniuses at the mega-corporation couldn’t foresee what would happen if there was a hiccup in the supply chain. And this occurred after Covid.

But in this case, the government does share a lot of the blame. Specifically:

    1. The Trump administration, for creating this clusterfuck in the first place due to the seriously flawed new trade agreement with Canada and Mexico; and

    2. The Biden administration, which has had almost 18 months to unfuck the mess created by the previous administration.

Somewhere between 5-4 and 7-2, seeing as how Thomas and Alito already ruled against a similar case with significantly better arguments.

That SCOTUS already ruled on the SEC case.

God your reading comprehension skills are terrible. I called the Republicans Nazis. I called your reflexive defense of the Democrats Putin-esque. And I wondered — wondered — if the Democrats’ good intentions were going to backfire and make things worse. But I did that one first, sans references to any of today’s villains. Learn to read.

Your reading comprehension skills continue to astound Kindergarteners, but disappoint their teachers.
It doesn’t, obviously. I didn’t claim it did, obviously (to anyone with two reading comprehension brain cells to rub together, so like everyone but you).

I have no doubt they will. If it’s successful. I don’t have any particular reason to believe it will be successful and some to believe it’s not, namely the way Swalwell described it — as money to help people afford it — when it’s a supply crunch, not an affordability problem.

Grandstanding by those (at least perceived to be) in power is less credible than that by those out of power.

    I’ll refer you to https://lindamoodbell.com/instruction

I don’t care, particularly. I think Rand Paul is getting no mileage out of his stunt, and it’s only hurting him. But if he was, it’d be worth checking out. It’s specific to the facts of the issue.

For the umpteenth time, wasting $40 billion in Ukraine is not going to cost Democrats any votes in the current political environment. Spending $28 million in a way that backfires and makes the formula shortage worse, would. It is not unreasonable to ask “is this going to backfire if it passes?”
