"Students and parents at a Colorado high school are outraged after administrators turned down their request for a spirit week day honoring America because it might offend non-Americans." ... "They said they didn't want to offend anyone from other countries or immigrants," ... The irony, said the students, is that they are required to participate in Cinco de Mayo celebrations. http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2014/...a-school-says/
It's too bad the schools fail to observe any patriotic holidays like Veterans' Day, Memorial Day, and Presidents' Day.
I think you've stumbled in to why this is only a story on Fox, which is to say why it isn't a story at all. Spirit week is a term used by many high schools to denote a week dedicated to celebrating the school and its students. These celebrations involve the wearing of school colors, pep assemblies, sometimes a dance, and usually an athletic competition. The article says that students proposed having a patriotic day incorporated in to the week -- 'Merika Monday. Since patriotism is not the purpose of spirit week, nor is a study of multi-culturalism or horticulture, adding events to celebrate non-relevant topics could be problematic.
Not to mention it is Fox and as often as not their stories turn out to not be true but they hardly ever air retractions.
Here's the story as reported by The Denver Post. Fort Collins High School will open their "Spirit Week" with "America Day" on Monday. http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_25060372/fort-collins-high-school-agrees-america-day-after
I expect this nonsense in California. Kinda surprised by it in Colorado... Then again, Fort Collins is pretty close to Boulder...
My high school's throwback day during Spirit Week sure was fun. Saw more than a few poodle skirts and old-timey hairdos and I don't know what else. I think we also had a Halloween costumes day and of course a toga day for the seniors.
From Cobalt's link: I am absolutely shocked to find that Fox missed the pertinent point of why 'Merika Monday was rejected.
That's a nice article filled with information yet notice how it is completely different from the "we're a victim" Fox garbage?
They're still celebrating a themed day about America but they rejected the use of a jingoistic term " 'Merica Day" which ties into stupid red necks saying if you're not one of them then you're not a real American. Fox news seems to have deliberately lied in order to fan the flames of hate & victimization which is the primary motivation of their brain damaged followers.
It's about the Real Murikans™, not them damn furriners, i.e., white people whose ancestors came here so long ago they don't even know where they came from.
Whenever something has an ambiguous meaning, it probably means sex. Like that drippy song "tonight, I celebrate my love for you". That's all about fucking. So, to "celebrate America", must mean dig a little hole in the ground, and stick your ding-dong in.
It's Todd Starnes. His whole thing at FOX is finding "War on Christmas/War on Christianity/War on patriotism" stories that almost always turn out to be blown out of proportion. We used to have more threads like this when Muad was still here. Muad loved Starnes and his alarmist bullshit.
