So some cocksmoker stole my mother's debit card number somehow (likely they either hacked a website where she bought something or some register jockey wrote down her numbers). They've cleaned out her checking account (somewhere in the neighborhood of 7k). The bank will replace the money, but in the meantime, she has no money in her checking account, all her automatic billpays are fucked up, she'll likely bounce a few checks, and all that. So what did these fine upstanding citizens buy? Shit they can sell easily like concert tickets from Ticketmaster, movie tickets, and cash advances. And of course Ticketmaster isn't set up to really know who is buying and then printing out the tickets. Those fuckers should be brought up on charges for aiding and abetting. It's a clear case of willful blindness. Other than treason, murder, and rape, theft is the worst crime in my opinion and should result in more than a slap on the wrist. What gives some asshole teenager with a computer the right to put his hands in my monther's bank account? Didn't his parents teach him right from wrong? The Boy knows not to touch things that aren't his and he's all of six. Sure the bank eats the cost, and that means it's a victimless crime to these pieces of shit, but what if in the meantime my mother, or anyone else they stole from, couldn't buy medication or food because these fags took all her money? My opinion is that theft should require restitution and then one year in a pillory in the town square of which ever town the crime was committed in for 16 hours per day. Every day for one year. Citizens should be allowed to throw whatever rotten produce at the fuckers. Any second occurance is an automatic 25 years at hard labor since the lesson obviously wasn't learned. And I don't mean 25 years in the yard at criminal graduate school either; put those fuckers to work digging holes, filling the holes, then redigging for 25 years if no producting physical labor can't be found. White collar criminals get the same punishment as blue collar ones. And public officals that get caught with their hands int he cookie jar get an automatic life at hard labor. Fucking thieves. The only hope I have is that whichever asswipes did this fuck around with the wrong person someday and end up in a hole in the motherfucking woods somewhere and I hope that they very last thing that goes through their mind, aside from some thug's bullet, is the though of them ripping off my mother.
How long were they able to access the account? When it happened to me I knew the same day. It takes time to clean out an account. My bank woulda called me if there were charges out of pattern. Like I wouldn't but 200 lbs of meat. Ya know what I mean.
I feel your pain. Shitbags who commit "cyber-crime" are worse IMO than some punk shoving a gun in your face and taking your wallet. At least with the punk you know how much you're out, the damage is done, get a new driver's license etc. and move on with your life. But like you said.....now you will bounce checks, deal with creditors, banks etc. to get your financial life back together. If I was the President I would initiate a bill to literally skin these fuckers alive and roll them in salt.
No, the correct race troll for this situation is to say that he's definitely not black because this sort of white collar crime requires too much intelligence.
Indeed, but you are more "financial" savvy than the average Joe/Jane. I have Wachovia.....they wouldn't/didn't call me when my account was possibly compromised. They were probably hoping I wouldn't notice so they could sock me with overdraft fees. Anywho.....I say denut every one of these spineless shitbags.
They did it over two days. The bank didn't call to ask her about the charges until the second day, by which time the assfucking thieves had already cleaned out her account. The card is now cancelled, but now we still have to wait to get her money back.
Make sure she fills out all forms necessary to get fund returned as soon as possible. You don't do the right stuff, you get nothing back. It takes a little time. They might put a certain amount back conditionally. But if the case doesn't resolve in a certain amount of time they will take it back. Believe me when I tell you that they might not be as helpful as you would like the bank to be.
More likely physical fraud, memorizing the numbers. More likely by a factor of several hundred times, in fact. The most likely is a waiter or waitress, followed by the customer in line behind her at a department or grocery store, followed by the cashier there. As long as that includes the counterfeiters at the Fed, and the thieves in Congress, So pretty much all of them. I like your ideas, and would like to subscribe to your newsletter. Unlikely, sadly.
This is the kind of shit that makes a motherfucker go all Ted Kazinski and live "off the grid" and shit. Oh....and let something happen in a weekend! Now you bank/authorities will sit on that shit forever.
They don't do it because they don't know it's wrong; they do it because they think they won't get caught. More than increasingly painful or humiliating punishment, if thieves get caught and put away more often it'll do more to deter theft.
I receintly went to the local ATM machine, and in a mindless rush forgot to get my ATM card from the Machine. Less than 10 minutes after it happened I immediately went back, and just that fast it was gone. I called the bank and had mines cancelled IMMEDIATELY!! So far my account is still intact, and the bank has assured me that the card is cancelled and a new card in on the way through the mail.
I recommend using a debit card tied to a checking account with a very low amount of cash in it. And do NOT sign up for the overdraft protection. Most banks let you transfer money online manually for free between accounts, and they also let you set up automatic transfers, so you can time those transfers to sync up with your automatic bill pay. This way you can usually keep only a few hundred dollars in your checking account, so if someone gets the card info, you won't lose too much. It requires a bit more manual monitoring since you have to make sure it has enough for your purchases, but it is a fairly decent protection mechanism.
That's what most of them are. Debit with Visa or MC logo. Some without the logo. Anything else is a credit card.
DUR! The key part is the very LOW amount of cash in the checking account. We all know what a debit card is. The point is that if you only keep a few hundred bucks in the account, you don't stand to lose much. And like I said before, DON'T get the overdraft protection, even though it is a nice safeguard against accidentally "bouncing" a transaction, it just opens up your other account(s) to being drained as well.
So you mean get a second account and keep a set amount of money in it for your debit card usage. And don't get a bank card for the main account.
Yeah. I mean most people already have a checking and a savings anyway, so you can just keep most of it in your savings and regularly shift small chunks into the checking account as needed (you can do this free online with most banks). But you can get an extra checking account if it's really important to keep one checking account stocked with a lot of cash for bills or something. For common spending, you want something that is really light on cash, so if it gets compromised, you are only out a few hundred bucks rather than thousands.
Not a bad idea but most people have ONE checking account. They usually can on;y maintain one account. If they have direct deposit it will require taking money from one and depositing to the other. People barely want to deal with the one except to take money out and get their pay deposited.
Right, as I said, you can set up automatic transfers for free as well. It takes some planning & setup but if you do it right you can stick with one light checking account, because you can set up an automatic transfer to occur right before an automatic bill pay. You can also set it to automatically transfer some cash on a regular basis to keep it from running dry. If you get your paycheck direct deposited into checking and not savings, you can also set an automatic transaction to move the bulk of it into savings as well. When you make unscheduled purchases that are big, you have to remember to go to your bank website and manually transfer some money though. It's kind of a pain, but if you run the debit card as credit (no difference on your end, but to the store, it appears to be a credit card), you get a couple of days before it processes. This way you can make a large purchase and then go home AFTER the fact and get your checking account up to date. It's not perfect, and it requires some effort, but you get extra protection from fraud.
really? I never heard that one before. Sounds like good advice though. Oh and lat time this happened to me was in January 07, Houston, TX. The only place I used this particular card was at the local stop and rob to pick up some tobacco. Yeah the chick behind the counter was mexican, so they gots the smarts too.
You have to stay ahead of the scammers. They could have a clone of your card right now but not use it right away. People who keep their card till the actual expiration date have a bigger chance of getting hit.
