It's bogus, your mouse determines which direction it spins.

    hardly.

i was going to try to let you do it on your own, but watch the shadow of her stationary foot. if you see it moving the other way eventually she will move the other way.

p.s. just because you don't understand something, doesn't make it bogus

Heehheheh, i can change its direction at will just by thinking about it.
Im used to thinking in that kind of terms though. Remember those pictures that became a craze in the 90's that just looked like a random mess until your brain 'got it', I not only used to be able to see them very easily, i could tell what the picture was before i had resolved it, and i could also make the picture appear above or below the page at will :D :P

    I rock!

i think the left/right brain this is bogus, but the test itself works. some people commented at the bottom of the page on how to see it, but it's still trippy when you do it.

The trick to changing her round is to concentrate on the legs, and whichever is 'in front' for you at a particular part of the rotation, just image it behind instead

If you click your mouse by the figures right head it will spin counter clockwise. If you then click the mouse by the left side of the head it spins counter clockwise...

Also, if you let it run long enough it changes back and forth on it's own after a while.

    edit: to Linda
Look at the address when typed into the address bar, does it have 'blocked:' at the begining?

Ok, I went back and last night, when you left click on the right side it would change the spin direction. Now it doesn't work anymore... Odd. I seriously am not making it up...

However, You can make it change directions with just your mind as well.

If you could control the spinning .gif by clicking on it the article would make no sense.
You realy did imagine it :)
See, thats why i dont believe in ghosts, peopls brains are just too unreliable to be believed

No, because the way the image looked after clicking the image last night doesn't look the same as when you change the direction in your head.

Perhaps I did imagine it. But last night when I'd click on the pic, the image would twist to the left or right to about 50 or 60 degrees then would "spin" in the direction... Today, when you click on the image, only thing that happens is that you get a little circle slash icon, like that on a no smoking sign.

i'm gonna guess that someone did not go on the .gif last night and change how it works.

it's perception....but i suppose it could be your perception that it doesn't work.

It took me a few minutes to get the hang of it, but I can see her going clockwise and anti-clockwise now. :techman:

A good way to see both directions is to view the shadow of the oustretched foot

Indeed, if you take the gif file and break it down frame by frame, the figure is always moving clockwise, it's your brain that gets tripped up.

The figure can be seen either way. I've gotten to the point where I can maker her sway back and forth, but the strain of shifting perception makes me nauseous.

Modified to have a half a second gap between frames instead of 0.03 seconds. You can see that it is always clockwise.

It's frustrating me because I'm usually quite good at "getting" illusions. :(

I honestly can't begin to comprehend that she would change directions. My brain is saying she's going clockwise and ONLY clockwise and I know that's not actually true. :weep:

Edit - I noticed right away that it appeared her shadow was going the other direction. But that didn't help me any. Bah.

No, your brain interprets it as either, but the image itself is always moving clockwise.

    OMG! I got it! EEEEE!

I can only get her to go half a circle before she switches directions, but I'm so happy I can see why people think she goes a different way. Oh man I feel better now.

No, the image can never be described as either as it is both at the same time.
That is, unless you include the shadow, which mostly points to clockwise but isnt totaly right for that either

i can still see both ways when slowed down.

i think nick might be right though. you have to look at her heel and see when the very back of her foot is covered by the front of her foot. i'm not the one who made it so i have no idea, but it still freaks me out.
