So, now that GamerGate-supporters finally got their chance to make their case in public in front of journalists at the Miami AirPlay-event, which was unfortunately cut short by a bomb-threat, what do you guys think? What's your opinion now on GamerGate? AirPlay-organizer Michael Koretzky's latetest update on the event: http://spjairplay.com/update14/
He's some muppet GamerGater who got banned from TNZ for being a duel. Apparently ethics in video game journalism is his thing which just about makes him the most pathetic fucker on the Internet. I'm guessing he's here to do his shtick now that TBBS has kicked him to the curb.
Oh, is that the reason given? Well, no I personally am not particularly interested in the ethics in games-journalism - it's important, but that is not the reason GamerGate interests me. I'm much more interested in the way Gamers are treated, viewed as and mischaracterized in the media. But thumbs-up for the insulting first interaction. Well done.
Oh, god. So much was said. The first panel. The second panel. The very short of it is, that in the first panel, the journalists of the SPJ agreed that the examples given by the present GamerGaters were indeed ethically questionable. The afternoon panel was ... a mess. The GGers wanted to go into and explain how GamerGate came to be characterized as it is now. Michael Koretzky was not interested in re-revisiting the past and wanted to discuss how things like GG could be handled in the future. I'd say it's difficult to do that when you don't discuss what went wrong before. Then the bomb-threat came when, after almost 90 minutes, the discussion turned into something useful.
The SJW side made a bomb threat? The GamerGaters should have taken it seriously, and not given the talk, and taken to Twitter, and hid under their beds crying. Law & Order needs to make an episode about them where they're martyrs. It's the only way.
Ancalagon, gul, Bailey, 14thdoctor, Packard, garamet- *They fire finger beams, and cross the streams on my head* DIE!!! DIE!!! DIE!!! DIIIEEE!!!!! Me- *Head explodes, dies* Ancalagon, gul, Bailey, 14thdoctor, Packard, garamet- *Holds up mirror* I'm a good person...I'm a good person...I'm a good person....
Bailey- Wait...I think maybe he was just joking around. garamet- Too late now, stupid!! Help me get his disgusting carcass into the shredder!!!! Packard- garamet- You little bitch!!! This was all your idea!!! Ancalagon- *Grabs Packard's shirt, and shakes him* Get it together mothafucka!! We're in this all the way!! You breathe a word of this to anyone, you turn up floating in a frog pond, y'dig!!?? Packard- Ancalagon- *Back handed slap* I said y'dig??? Packard- Ancalgon- *whispered to garamet when Packard gets out of earshot* He can't be trusted, we're going to have to kill him. garamet- 14thdoctor- *Cold-bloodedly hands Packard sawed off Diacanu parts to throw into the shredder* Packard-
Two confirmed ones. There were also numbers as high as ten mentioned. BTW: No one said it was SJWs. The identity of those responsible for the threats isn't (yet) known.
Could have been gamer gaters looking to bring more attention. In fact, that's quite a bit more likely, since most people aren't even aware that they exist, nor do they care enough to make a bomb threat.
*All of them in a van together, driving away from the main crime scene with trash bags of human mulch to disperse to several secondary crime scenes* Packard- *Still sobbing, and now hyper-ventilating* Bailey, 14thdoctor- *Thousand mile stares* garamet, Ancalagon- gul- Y'know, something changed inside me when I killed...and I kinda liked it. I'd like to feel that way again. We'll have to do this again. garamet- gul- Fine, fuck you guys, I'll go out killing without you. This is who I am now. Ancalagon- *Gives garamet a secret little nod signalling "we're gonna have to kill his ass too"* garamet-
gul- *Tied to a wooden chair, outdoors, away from civilization, sobbing* Ancalagon- *Finishes soaking gul in butane* gul- Please, not like this!! Not like this! I'll do anything! I'll do anything! Not like this! Ancalagon- *Sets gul alight with a tossed Zippo* gul- *Undescribable screams fading to silence* Packard- *Also tied to a chair, also soaked in butane* Do it. Just do it. Get it over with. I don't want to be in a world like this anymore. Ancalagon- *Lights a stick off of gul, tosses it on Packard* Packard- *Clenches teeth, holds in the screams, takes it like a man in the end* 14thDoctor, Bailey- *Dead inside* garamet- Any questions? 14thDoctor, Bailey-
..and now the exciting conclusion. (2 days later) Bailey- *Dead with head in oven* 14thdoctor- *Dangling from noose, wife walks in, screams, drops laundry basket, toddler is on floor playing with a truck, oblivious somehow* garamet- *Shows up at E3 wearing a bomb jacket* EEEEEEYYAAAAHHH!!!! *Runs up to the stage, pumps the detonator....nothing happens* (Flashback to Ancalagon making fake C4 out of modeling clay) Ancalagon- *Watches garamet get taken away in a paddy wagon on the news, does lines of coke off his coffee table* (Flashback to garamet replacing Anc's cocaine with powdered Drano) Ancalagon- *Runs around in circles screaming, smoke rolling out of all his face holes* (Cut to courtroom) Judge- The chair!! garamet- I'll be waiting for all of you in Hell with a gun.
It's basically a subculture of a subculture that tries to be all self important by whining really loud but at the end of the day is really just a bunch of nerd zit factories that are angry that girls won't fuck them.
The bomb threat thing does suck but as others said it might not have been the "enemies" of the gamergaters as it just as likely could have been a gamergater trying to get headlines.
I'm saying that gamer gate is just a tiny blip on the stage of world events. So to most of us, it's insignificant, and when somebody beats his chest and claims that it is actualy something important, well, that's just not so.
Yeah, sure... shall we apply this kind of thinking to Valkenburg, Wu and Sarkeesian too? No, the most likely suspects are the same kind of trolls who doxed the panellists during the live-stream in the chat. And whoever claimed that it is all that important in the grander scheme of things? No one. But it is important to the Gamers and the games industry and the games journalists.
Muppetism aside, gaming journalism has a distinct lack of ethics. Most people consider it a joke...like you, so there is no reason to reform it.
