A thought occurred. Now, this is entirely an amoral thought, but I digress. Anyway, what if all people known to be in a criminal organization or repeat offenders were denied medical care? Wouldn't natural selection work itself out, or would be left with a group of uber-criminals?
I think you assume no doctors would break the law and treat the criminals anyway, either out of compassion or greed. Like a mutant strain of bacteria immune to antibiotics?
or that the criminal wouldn't take the doctor and force them to give medical care because a gun was at their head or the head of a loved one.
If you think the prohibition of alcohol or leisure drugs produces a need for a black market, you haven't seen anything yet.
Wouldn't that be a money sink for gangs though, lowering their profits and thus overall survivability?
yes - or else just kidnap the doctor on the way home from work or on the way to work. Hey, they're criminals! they do what they want!
And that police wouldn't surround and end them before their friend got his first stitch? Here we go. Good point. Lojack your car, quit driving a BMW, fence and guard parking lots.
Individually, yes. But on the whole, the creation of a necessary black market will not strengthen law enforcement, but organized crime. It always does.
I don't know. In a world where advancement comes from assassination and ruthlessness, I'd think the sickly gazelles would be eaten. Besides, medicine is a little more involved than selling drugs.
I just watched an episode of House from season 2 where he treated and diagnosed a patient on death row! It was crazy.... good episode.
Actually, the doctor might get sued if he refused treatment... even to a criminal. They'd call it discrimination or something. I've done dental work on guys who were chained up and escorted in by police. There was no option to refuse.
That hasn't stopped doctors in the past and doesn't stop them now, just look at euthanasia or abortion (when/where illegal). There are plenty of doctors who risk prison etc. I don't see how it would stop doctors in this scenario.
No way would that work... It's counter to the hipocratic oath and unethical. There is no judge, jury or jail big enough to change my mind at least. Of you start there, then what's next? Political opposition? What crime is big enough? Murder or jay-walking?
I can't get the mental image out of my mind of the old Prohibition tunnels in Chicago full of medical equipment... and moonshine.
In my opinion doctors and nurses and pyschologist involved in torturing patients should lose their license. We shouldnt also let anyone who committed a atrocity from another country to be allowed to practice medicine. Same standards that we apply to medical personal from other countries immigrating to us. My mother's a nurse so I think it's creepy that some doctors and nurses helped to sick mother fucker's who at Abu Gharib.
I was watching "Gangland". This guy was showing off his scars and related the story how he was in a coma for four days because he got shot, shooting someone.
Murder, membership in a criminal organization. Of course, the intent was those already guilty of those crimes as found by a court of law would be denied medical care if and when they make a return visit with a violent wound/police escort. Of course, it is a bit unethical from one point of view, so all public funds could come with a stipulation...
So if a repeat offender showed up in an ER with a gunshot wound and a police escort, just pack his ass up and ship him to the graveyard before his heart even stops beating? No benefit of a judge or a court of law is neccessary? So what happens if the guy survives to have his day in court and it'sdetermined that the repeat offender was actually a victim of crime and not the offender this time...Can the doctor/hospital now be sued for negligence? Let's say that this repeat offender survives with a bullet in his ass, and a few years later shows up in a doctor's office with a curable case of cancer? Then what?
That was going to be my answer. A quick bullet to the brain is cheaper, and much more humane. Smaller offenses should probably get a smaller bullet.
