Seems the return of old franchises has made Columbia sit up and take note...

I've long been a fan of Ghostbusters and after I heard there would be no third film in favour of a game I was very dissapointed. But, if than can secure Murray, who was always reluctant to do a third picture, then I would be very excited to see this happen. That said, Ramis is a right fat fuck these days so Egon might look a bit different...

The game was going to be the third chapter in the story, in which you would play the recruit they hired to help them clean up all the calls they were getting (business started booming after the events in NYC). So you get to see all the hilarity, hijinx and horror from a front row seat. Personally I think the transfer in medium would have been fun and entertaining, plus allow for them to ignore all the years that have passed and taken their toll on the actors.

Problem with a game is if, like me, you don't buy consoles you're chances of being able to enjoy the product are far less than a movie. But, in any event, it seems we'll get both.

True, it would be hard to stamp out a game project as big as Ghostbusters was purported to have been. I'd love to see another movie, and I am intrigued to see how they'll play it off- it couldn't be related to the game plotline too directly since the characters in the game are still the younger visage from the movies (it is supposed to be set in the months after GBII). It would be cool to see them hire on a younger team of paranormal investigators and shcool 'em in the Ghostbusters style, setting up the elder actors as mentors in any possible future movies. I know, I know "sequels suck", but I like the possibility of more entertainment out of a ripe franchise.

In that vein though, I do have one thing I'd like to add as my own personal note about sequels. More movie 'verses should put sequels in a position to be left out as canon at the discretion of the viewer. I think any series that is good in its parts and equally good as a whole is great, but one where you can pick and choose which parts to like and still get the same sense of closure and completion as someone who has viewed it in its entirity, is better.

I really hope the game gets published. It looked pretty cool from some of the footage, and with Akroyd and Ramis writing it, it's bound to be hilarious.

My only worry about another film sequel is that most of them have aged very very much (for Ramis in particular, time was very unkind to him). But as long as the funny is there, it won't bother me. I suppose they could do some sort of "get the gang back together even though we're old farts" type thing.

El Chup, if you had told me you were a Ghostbusters fan I could took you over to the firehouse they used in the movie. I drive past it often. The firetrucks from that station have Ghostbuster logos on them.

The game is dead. The movie franchise is dead.

They'd probably be releasing the ghostbusters cartoon to dvd to gauge public reaction if a movie was seriously in the works. I'm fairly certain (but by no means sure) that only a handful of episodes ever made it to dvd. Besides the cast is FAR TOO OLD now. Have you seen any of them lately? If it was remade, it would be recast. Hmmm.... What SNL actors would they cram in there? Ghostbusters starring Jimmy Fallon ?

The game is dead. Why? Because the dipshits started making a game they never had the rights to ! Its REALLY dead, XPlay called the time of death. Guess somebody should have checked into that whole "copyright" thing. Oh well.

No, some other developers started making a Ghostbusters game that they never had the rights to and are going to release it under a different name. That's not the game the article is referring to. Sony/Columbia owns the rights and they're the ones who commissioned this game, which I think was very near completion.

My understanding is that Activision, after a recent merge with Vivendi, decided to not publish several titles, and Ghostbusters was one of them. The developers and PR people have said the game will be published, just probably not this October as it was scheduled. Sony has hinted that it's more likely to be released on the 25th anniversary of the first film in 2009.

You deserve to be lied to if you watch X-Play or almost anything on G4.

    Fucking assholes ruined TechTV. :bang:

X-Play is like the only remaining decent TechTV leftover. (I'm not even a gamer, my kids watch it - good show. Funny.)

I loved the old C-64 Ghostbusters! You got X number of dollars to set up your Ghostbusters franchise and then you went out to catch ghosts and make money to buy newer, better stuff. The music and the "voice synthesization" (to say nothing of the graphics) are dated by today's standards, but they were cutting edge at the time. If you listened closely enough you could actually hear your characters say "He slimed me!"

Those old C-64 games were so much better than what is out there now. More original, better thought out, more fun to play--Mail-Order Monsters, Bruce Lee, Elite, M.U.L.E.--you name it. They rocked.
