The reason car sales are not as good here in China is that they cost way too fucking much here. It would be interesting to see a car price comparison. They keep cranking out those 30K$ silverados here and people just can't afford them. They should make cars in the 10K price range if they want to sell to everyone and make money on volume.
The reason car sales aren't as good here as in China is because China has 1.4 billion people 90% of them have never owned a car and there is virtually no used car market because so many people are first time car buyers. Oh, and China still has a MASSIVE tariff on imported goods like cars. You want to buy a German made BMW or an American made Caddy? Sure, you can buy them but the cheapest model will cost you $80,000. The reason why most automakers don't bother with the sub $10,000 market in the US is because at that end of the market you're competing against used cars. People can buy a 4-6 year old car which is much nicer than any new car you can buy for that price so WTF bother? China can get away with that because $10,000 is all many people can afford and there are so few used cars there effectively isn't a used car market.
There is one problem that has and ,as far as I can tell, always will be the problem with electric cars. One word "Batteries". Having worked with electrical drives of all kinds most of my life in industry, electricity would be the prefect answer for a car if not for batteries. What about all the hype about fuel cells which in theory is a hydrocarbon fueled battery. What happened to that. The idea for those was the more complete conversion of energy from fossil fuels and very limited pollution as a result to boot. Talking with a friend, he has this conspiracy theory that the current power producing industry has crushed that for fear it would give homes power independence as a result. Can you imagine, a hydrocarbon fueled battery that is super efficient and quiet. That would be perfect as a home generator.
What you're talking about is a fuel cell (as is used in the Chevy Volt) which, BTW, isn't a battery but Lanz already went over that.
$10,000 is all a lot of people right here in the USA can afford for a new car as well. Yeah, you can buy a half worn out car for half the price, but there is a market for an affordable basic compact car that gets good gas mileage. GM is ignoring this market and as soon as gas hits $5 a gallon again they will be right back in the same shit they were in when it hit $4. Cars are way over priced, they have been going up in both the amount of the payment and the number of payments for years. That is an exponential price increase and it cannot stand. US car makers are now catering to the wealthy, and there is still lots of money to be made at the bottom end with volume, the Henry Ford way, the Wal-mart way. This past year I know several working class people who bought the Nissan Versa for $9999 and are happy with them. It seems Nissan is going back to its roots and may gain a lot from that. Working people just can't afford and don't want the $35K Nissan Armada with the V8. Look around on any road in America and you will see most cars have 1 person in them.
You can get an excellent used car for $10,000. On the other hand, the shortcuts that would be required to make a new car cost $10,000 would probably make it a piece of junk.
