I was wondering what Gunforge uses to clean/lube their guns. Here lately, I've been lazy and just use Break Free for both cleaning and rust prevention/general lubrication, and grease on the rails/contact points. I want to get back into the habit of using a solvent for cleaning, and lubricant/protectant for rust prevention, rather than CLP for both. So what do you guys use?
This is what I currently use. For the bore and chamber I buy the Break Free Bore and Chamber foaming cleaner. Yeah its expensive but I'm lazy. So what I do is throw that down the bore and chamber, let it sit for about 10 minutes, then run a Hoppe's Bore Snake through it a few times and its clean as a whistle. Its the easiest cleaning system I have come across. If necessary I run a chamber brush as well For the other components I have a quantity of disposable small baking trays (the type you make very small a pound cake in). I put my parts in there and spray with either Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber (you can also use a can of chlorine free brake cleaner). Once again a bit more expensive, but as always, I'm lazy and volia...clean. Spraying into the baking tin has the added bonus of catching the run off. So when I'm done with a part, I let it soak in the fluid until I'm done. Then I simply wipe down with a cloth diaper and I'm done. For lube I just use plain old fashioned CLP. Alternatives: Some times when my cash flow outweighs my laziness, I will use Hoppe's #9 with an Otis cleaning kit. It gets the job done, but takes longer. You can also make your own cleaning solvent. Its called 'Ed's Red'. Its simply (IIRC) an equal mix of mineral spirits, kerosene, ATF fluid, and something else I cant recall. Just google it for the correct formula. Lubes: I've heard good things about weapons shield and Militec, but I havent played with them at all. Some folks swear by true synthetic motor oils, but I dunno about that.
I used to use Ed's Red. You left out acetone. How do you clean your bore snakes? Last time, I stuffed them into a sock and threw the sock into the washing mashine. That seemed to work pretty well.
Gun Scrubber, Hoppes and lube with CLP. I need to get some bore snakes. The patches are getting tedious in my old age.
I ran out of Lithium grease a bit ago and started doing that. I'm convinced that's the reason my Sig was short stroking during a class I took a couple of weeks ago.
Big ass can of BreakFree CLP and a couple of soft rags. I like to pour the lube on, rubbing the oil gently into all the nooks and crannies with my fingertips, probing, stroking gently, gently with my soft but powerful hands... ...then I catch all the filthy drippings with some paper towels.
Gun Scrubber for pre-clean. Hoppes for the clean. Tetra grease or Lucas oil for the rails and contact points depending on the gun. Oh, and I thought I was gonna die the last time I cleaned weapons. I just step out onto the front porch and spray the gun scrubber. Right as I pressed the button to start the spray, the wind shifted and blew it all back in my eyes. Burned like a sumbitch.
