Anyone order a gun from J&G Sales before? I'm kinda looking at a Romanian Tokarev they have listed. The importer is listed as PW Arms.

No. And everything about your post is as wrong as a monkey fucking a football. Unless you're 20, in college, and broke. Don't get a Cold War Soviet pistol, made in Romania. Get a 1911. Or a *wince* Glock. Or a Walther PPK/S. Or a Browning Hi-Power (or just a modern Wonder 9 decocker).

I am in college and poor. I also happen to have an interest in older guns. I'd love to get a 1911, but there's no way I can afford to get one until I start making some engineering money. And I'd still be interested in a Tokarev.

Never done business with J&G, so can't offer anything there.

Is the Tokarev you're looking at the 9x19mm (9mm Luger) model?

The only time I've ever ordered a gun online was a few months ago when I bought a PPQM2 from Bud's because I couldn't find the model I wanted at any of the gun stores around here.

I don't have any interest in owning a Tokarev, but if I did I'd get one chambered for 9mm Luger like Paladin says. Much easier to find ammo for it.

No, it's in 7.62x25. I'm not too worried because Sellier & Bellot makes them, and J&G actually sell it. Actually I've bought ammo from J&G before for my Enfields and my Mosin Nagant.

You certainly can get 7.62x25mm ammo on the market today, but I wouldn't count on it being available at Wal-mart or at your local shooting range. It's also a bit more expensive.

Get what you want, but--were it me--I'd save up a little more and get a Glock or something similar in a more familiar caliber. J&G has used G22s/G23s in VG condition for $399.

Can you still get those captured mint condition Nazi P-08's that came out of Russian storage? I got one about 10 years ago for $300, just perfect, matching numbers and clip.

I've honestly never purchased ammo from Wal-Mart since .22 suddenly became hard to find and expensive when you did. I used to buy at Scheels and/or Cabela's, but now I mostly shop online for ammo and have for a few years now.

I'd be more interested in the Beretta 92S they have than a Glock, if only because I'm more familiar with it. I've pretty much decided I'm going to get the Tokarev, though. It's funny because I was thinking a Ruger III was going to be my first pistol as something I could shoot gophers with when I'm out mowing at the folks' next summer, but I think I'm going to be using this instead, in spite of how much overkill it is.

Nope. All the Lugers I've seen have been pretty expensive. Kind of like 1911s that way. Because "desirable" I guess. Of course, guns have gone up in general. Used to be you could get a Mosin or a VZ-24 for under $100 pre-2010, but since then both have gone up quite a bit. Mosins are still cheapest and generally run under $200, but VZ-24s are getting to be almost $300, and some of the ones in really good shape are already over that.

I wouldn't buy that. You don't know it's condition since it's an online sale and while I'm sure the store isn't going to purposely sell a dud the fact is that gun is old and used. Fixing it may be a difficult and expensive thing to do in the event something goes wrong.

You're buying a gun that may be needed to defend your life. A used old gun from Romania is not that gun.

Save up some more and buy a new/used gun from a established brand. I prefer new but that's just me. Some people are comfortable with a used gun. I would just make sure it was a recent gun that can easily be repaired by yourself if need be.

Of course this post is moot if you're not going to be EDC with this gun but just have it for fun.

The only used gun I own is the Mosin that a coworker gave to me 20-something years ago.

If I were to buy a used firearm, I'd have to do it in person so I can examine it before I put down my money.

I'm going to step back for a second. What do you want a semiautomatic pistol for? Self defense? Home defense or concealed carry? Or do you just want something that is fun to shoot? Because if you just want a pistol that is fun to shoot, I'd say head down to your local gun shop and pick up a used Ruger MkII .22. My first pistol was a used Ruger MkI that I think I paid $130 for. It was money well spent and I couldn't guess how much ammo I've run through it or how many hours of pleasure it's given me. Having seen it utterly fail to kill a raccoon without more shots than I care to admit, I wouldn't recommend it for self defense, but if push came to shove, I'd rather have my Ruger MkI than nothing. If the bad guy hasn't had second thoughts after eating nine .22 bullets, I could still beat him pretty well with it. And the front sight is pretty big and nasty and sharp.

Romanian Tokarevs have a pretty good reputation (especially compared to other examples from other Communist Bloc countries), which is part of why I'm interested. I'd prefer one from Russia, but Romanian will do. Pretty sure this would be too large for concealed carry, and honestly I'm not that interested in concealed carry. This will simply be an addition to the collection, which I will also use to blow the hell out of gophers when I go mow my folks' lawn out in the middle of no where.

Yeah, I'd rather get to look at it and pick out my own, but unfortunately no one around here really carries them, and the last few gun shows I've been to all have Yugo Tokarevs, which are kinda shit. Of course I say that, and come the next one I'll find a Romanian or Russian Tokarev after having bought this one. My only confusion right now is how to go about doing it. I know a local pawn shop has an FFL, but do I order it and have it shipped to them, or do I have them order it for me or what?

    The website explains it: http://www.jgsales.com/faq.php

Usually it's like what the website shows. You ask the local shop if they will take a delivery for you and then you order it from the online site.

When I lived in a shit neighborhood 25-something years ago and needed a pistol, I bought a Ruger P85. Not the coolest gun in the world, but it gave me a lot of firepower at an affordable price (seriously, I bought it at cost--less than $300--from my best friend's dad, who was a gun dealer at the time).

I used to tuck that pistol in my pants just to check the mail. :storm:

Not a bad looking piece. The one I have my eye on is $75, and may or may not function. Also, it's a 22, apparently.

I like old guns, but not for something that I might have to bet my life on.

So I ended up getting one of these. Turns out a local shop actually did have them. Came with a holster and an extra mag, but the holster is worn to shit so I'll probably get a nice Russian surplus one from eBay. Set me back $250, which was more than J&G was selling them by about $30, but no shipping cost or having to deal with a local FFL holder (was looking at maybe a local pawn shop that has one), and I got to look at it pretty closely in person before I plopped down money for it.

Got me a weeaboo rifle today. Unfortunately it's crest has been removed and its missing a few other parts, but the bore looks awesome. Tough part is finding some ammo for it. Anyone know of Precision Cartridge Inc. ammo is any good (of course everyone seems out of stock unless it's the $50 /20 rd box stuff). Also, anyone know how to establish manufacturing date with these?

Yep. Seems kind of hard to find unless I shell out $50 for a 20 round box.
