I wouldn't knowingly allow a homosexual to touch any food of mine. No way I'd ask them to bake a cake.

They showed they understood "love thy neighbor as yourself" better than the Christiansbigots who tried to force the issue?

Excuse me, sir, I realize you're black, and you own a bakery staffed with black people, but why do you oppress me by not letting me have a cake that says "Niggers go back to Africa?"

This "man" is about as Christian as ISIS is Muslim.

Fuck letting extremists of any stripe define the narrative.

    BBC.com

David Cameron and Ed Miliband have highlighted the persecution of Christians in their Easter messages.

The prime minister said it was "shocking" to know people abroad were still being "threatened, tortured - even killed" because of their faith.

Labour's Mr Miliband wrote that people in the UK "must do everything we can" to condemn oppression, highlighting the plight of Christians in Syria, Iraq, and Indiana.

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg condemned Thursday's killings in Kenya, and the pressures faced by Christian bakeries in the US.

I had to add some bits that got left out of their delivery, but the references to the States was surely somewhere in their prepared remarks.

He called a cookie shop. They told him they wouldn't make a hateful cookie with a statement against homosexuals. I'm sure if he asked them to make a cookie celebrating a straight marriage they would have been happy to. Sorry I didn't listen to the rest, but if he asked them to make a cake suggesting Straight Christian's go to hell I bet they would have refused. The cookie proprietor sounded much more intelligent then joe-christian in the video.

He's asking them to purposefully harm their business. This is just beyond stupid and it's even more stupid to think this proves some sort of point.

It's like calling a Jewish deli, and asking them to make a swastika sub, and then being all "what? What? It's my beliefs! You gotta respect my beliefs!".

    Come on, dude.

Just wait. Once they've clearly lost the gay rights battle, they're going to transition (heh) to attacking trans rights full time. That'll be all sorts of pathetic.

I wonder what sort of foodstuffs it'll involve... :chris:

Christians in Kenya have the right to say they are persecuted and tortured.
Any Christian in the US who claims this needs to go to Kenya to get schooled by the experts.

As opposed to "Excuse me sir. I realize you're christian and you own a bakery staffed by christians but why do you oppress me by not making a cake for an event that stands against everything you believe in?"

Frankly if it was me that owned these bakeries I'd bake the cake because money is money. But I certainly understand where these faith based groups are coming from.

There's a difference between the two examples. One policy discriminates, while the other protects against discrimination by not accepting the order. It's like if a member of the local chapter of the KKK came into your shop and asked you for some matches and 2x4's, and explains to you there's a guy they need to convince to leave town, so this is not one of those situations where it's all the same.

Yay, it's yet another variation on the "objecting to prejudice is exactly the same as prejudice itself" theme the Social Right has been peddling for the last ... I don't even know how many decades.

Someone needs to sit this guy down and explain false equivalencies to him.

What he is doing is not the same thing as a gay couple asking a bakery owned by Christians to make stuff for their wedding. It's the same thing as if a gay couple wanted to order a cake with "Jesus loves sodomy" written on it. No one is saying that Christian bakers have to write things like that on cakes. Well, maybe some people feel that way, but they're dipshits, and that goes far beyond equal rights.

To prove that gay people are hypocrites, he'd have to simply ask them to make catering stuff for a traditional marriage event in itself without anything written on the cake. If he did that and was turned down, he'd have a point. He didn't do that. Furthermore, several of the people he spoke to said something along the lines of "We'd be happy to make catering items for your event, but we're not writing 'gay marriage is wrong' on anything." So even if he was reasonable he'd still have no point.

Earlier I listened to a radio host who had called the oldest gay bar in Indiana to rent it out for an evening. They owner explained the differing rates for different days, and then asked what the function was. The host said "A traditional marriage rally" and the owner said "Fuck you!" and hung up. Clear anti-Christian bigotry. So should the host file a lawsuit?

This is a clear example of the second step of Conservative Dipshitery. This is troubling as recently we were on step one.

The Steps of Conservative Dipshitery are:

    1: Whine about taxes.
2: Make hyperbolic, whiny claims about how liberals are ruining things for everyone.
3: Insist that the Bible is the ultimate authority for all mankind and whine when people disagree.
4: Threaten to secede from the union/start a revolution when whining doesn't work.
    5: Go to step one.

Now I'm going to go post this in three or four other threads like it's the most clever thing ever said.

wonder how many of those bakers live in states in which recording without consent is illegal?

And publishing the recording is also illegal?

Be that as it may, both he and you seen to be struggling with the distinction between that which communicates an ideological message and that which does not...

by the way, both parties to that first phone call are pathetic at making an argument for their position.
