So, it would be better if a legal citizen had waxed a bunch of kids? Or are we invoking some kind of tortured "logic" that requires us to ignore the random possibility that an illegal will save someone's life? I'm all for securing the borders, but I see no rational conclusions to be drawn from this.

A legal alien with a legal driver's license would have met certain basic standards to get said driver's license, like passing a competency test. Her actions demonstrate the total lack of regard that the illegals have for our laws. They can just hop across the boarder (illegally) and then drive a motor vehicle on our highways without a driver's license (illegally).

Pretty much. I started a thread a couple days ago about the Iraq war Vet who raped a baby. The general consensus was that his being an Iraq vet wasn't relevant at all, and that his actions aren't indicative Iraq vets as a whole. Truly, fine reasonable conclusion. Now here we have a thread about an illegal immigrant causing a fatal car accident, and the general consensus is that her being an illegal immigrant is[/i] relevant, and that her actions are indicative of illegal immigrants as a whole. Is there something I'm missing here, other than one group being more popular than the other?
If she wasn't here in the first place, she wouldn't have been able to drive a car recklessly, and without a licence or insurance, in the first place. And while the vast majority of Iraq War vets aren't baby rapers, every single illegal alien has disregarded the law by virtue of their being here, and many, if not most, disregard other laws like getting driver's licences, or staying in the area after they've been in a car wreck so they don't get deported.
And of course the constant mantra from the 'illegal immigration is A-OK' crowd is that they are uniformly hard working people that will make the country a better place. When in reality there's a high level of crime associated with illegal immigration, because this is a subset of the population that's already normally prone to breaking the law (in this case, mostly young males), they have already proven they will work outside the boundaries of the law when needed, and as JCD rightfully points out that very status makes it difficult for them to work inside the law otherwise. There are tons of social issues associated with having 12-20 million people off the grid. Not the least of which is gang violence. If the liberals want to propagate the myth that every illegal is a 45 year old father of three that just wants the opportunity to cut your grass, you'll continue to see the examples where that isn't the case. Again, 80 illegals a month in a pretty small county that I happen to live next to are showing up as being arrested and jailed. IN a lot of places, illegal immigration doesn't have much of an affect. And in others, it has a tremendous affect. I live in one of those places, so it's an issue that concerns me. Especially considering my wife is a LEGAL immigrant, and we've had to jump through hoops for several years to get her status approved.
And what, prey tell, happened when, for example, Elliot Spitzer agreed with you and tried to push legislation that would allow for illegal alien residents to be trained and licensed as drivers? Illegal aliens are going to drive, licensed or not. Any large group of able bodied people looking for work who are denied licenses for reasons other than their ability to drive safely is going to have a large number of people driving without a license. Forbidding them from getting licenses and then complaining about the consequences of them driving without them is meshugenuh. If you really think that illegal immigration is a significant problem, there are vastly saner ways of addressing the problem than by making sure that illegal immigrant drivers are untrained, uninsured, and have lots of motivation to flee from accidents.
Seal the border and make life so unpleasant here for illegals that they choose to leave and/or not come in the first place. I'd be perfectly happy to have my taxes go to rooting out and deporting illegals, and even springing the bill for imprisoning them if that's part of the deal.
Yes, like fining the hell out of companies that employ them, deporting them when found, checking their status when they use public services, denying them public services whenever possible, tightening border security, investigating identity fraud at the IRS for the ones that are using people's identities illegally, cracking down on ethnic gangs, and overall lowering their incentive to come here. You want to come in legally, you are welcome to it. The US allows more legal immigration than any other country in the world. You decide to violate the law to come here, you shouldn't be rewarded for it.
