I have to admit, I thought he wanted to have a conversation about this, but maybe not. I suspect a lot of us know people who have committed suicide. But a lot of us also have other personal background issues that might conflict with the style of discourse here at the Forge. The kill yourself meme is a joke, no doubt a joke in poor taste, but still nothing more than that. Like other jokes in poor taste, it will eventually go away.
I lost a high school friend to suicide, so there is a 'too soon' factor to consider if he did lose someone, but at the same time, if someone is so thin skinned to seriously consider following through when one of us posts the meme, they shouldn't be posting at this board and should be getting help; if they recently lost someone to suicide, they probably should mention that instead of dredging up old posts to neg.
I've also lost a friend to suicide. It was a long time ago, but it's still not funny. Perhaps WAB can explain to us why he thinks it is.
As the suicide you refer to took place "a long time ago" the answer is simple. Comedy = tragedy + time
I don't understand. It's basic math, garamet. Your friend's death is amusing now. You should be glad he's dead. It's hilarious.
*mburtonk lies dead on the floor with an empty bottle of pills in his hand* *Glowy shit comes out of his shirt collar and sleeves, and he morphs into Colin Bakker* WAB- mburtonk, what happened to you!?!? Mburtonk- (Smugly) Change. And not a moment too soon. (Dr. Who theme) Weeeooo-oooo! Weee-oo-oooo!!!
Cf. Last of the Time Lords, end of nuWho Season 3, suicide (assisted) of the Master. (Ultimately kinda faked, but believable to the Doctor.)
I agree. I know it's the internet and you should have thick skin when dealing with others on it but I think that's going a little too far. Just my opinion on the matter.
I guess I could stop contributing to the meme but gturner posts just seem to demand that response sometimes.
No more so than a once-respected science fiction author turning into an internet message board troll.
It happened over time so there's not really a specific link. I dunno if it was RL troubles that caused it or what, but he eventually devolved into a douchey dickhead here. Like he was trying to compensate for something. Like Dayton, his attempts to play Internet Badass didn't go well. It's telling that he disappeared once he was no longer a mod. Kinda like a dickhead cop who gets his badge taken away.
I remember he posted a thread seeking advice for a "friend" who was devastated over the impending breakup of his marriage, and he was never really the same after that. Funny, he explicitly said the "friend" was 27, and I had always imagined Clyde as being somewhat older than me, even though I didn't really have any solid reason to think so.
