Yeah, Clyde kept a pretty tight lid on personal info, but on occasion he would reveal something, and I too was quite surprised to find that he was quite a bit younger than the imagined RL Clyde I had created. If the "friend" was indeed him, then it wouldn't be too surprising if he was suffering a nervous break-down.
Interestingly, Clyde and I almost met in RL once. But our discussion of the idea broke down shortly after I suggested a number of bars. I didn't realize it at the time, but he almost certainly would have been too young to go to a bar, as this was about 12 years ago.
Mostly it goes on the TOS for liability reasons. The board cannot be seen encouraging annoying idiots to kill themselves. However, most moderators actually end up getting so much shit from emotional blackmailers that they tend to root for such things. You see suicidal whiners often turn on the mods because they do not do enough to protect them from the world. Also, if you try to protect a suicidal whiner as a board moderator they often feel that is an open invitation to violate TOS rules and troll other people. Then the mod becomes public enemy #1 when they have to enforce the TOS on the suicidal asshole. There are care bear boards out there, but even they get effected by drama between suicidal people and passive aggressive behavior. I have even seen some boards get so fed up with it they will ban people for threats of suicide. The internet is not your psychiatrist.
