Sure, many people would refuse to fly if flying meant wearing this gizmo. But some people might be thinking that "Hey, I'm no terrorist, so I have nothing to lose." And some people just wouldn't have any practical choice but air travel.

They're high fixed cost operations that are only able to make a profit by selling tickets at well above marginal costs. If even 10% of their passengers stop flying at once, they're up shit's creek, because their costs won't go down anywhere near 10%. They can adjust to slower decreases in the size of their customer base by retiring planes and personnel, but sudden declines in passenger base kill airlines. A regulation like this would be worse than 9/11 for the airlines because they wouldn't be able to wait out a temporary decrease in the size of the passenger base because the decrease would be permanent. Once the airlines start junking working planes and need to fire half their pilots, they're going out of business until we have half the airlines flying half the routes the do today. Note that this wouldn't affect anyone wealthy enough to have a private plane.

What is proposed in this article is obviously a Bad Idea. And the government does fuck up on occasion - I think everyone can agree with that. But the idea that revolution is just around the corner is absolutely ridiculous, because the vast majority of people are more than happy with how things are. And, the simple truth is that America is one of, and arguably the, best countries to live in on this Earth. And if you think for a second people are going to throw that away ust to satisfy some romantic idea about America that the country has never, ever been, you're quite mistaken.
