Figured I'd start a new thread, out of the of chest-thumping and penis-measuring of a pissing contest that the main BNT thread has become , to talk about how everyone is naming their planets. So I've got a bunch of planets named after those within the Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda (c) universe, and another bunch named after planets in the universe of the Hyperion cantos (by Dan Simmons). What about the rest of you? Star Trek, I assume, for some. Star Wars? Haven't seen any of those personally. Who's got Stargate universe planets? Any others worth mentioning? Three Stooges, anyone? Favorite bands? Family members? Favorite diseases? C'mon, I'm sure there's some clever folks playing this game, right? Right?
I'm trying to find my first planet, which will, of course, be named after one of the four rivers of the Underworld. Styx, probably.
With my first account, I was naming my worlds after the twelve colonies. After that account died I started over with my new planets being named in honour of their nuked brethren. So there is a New Caprica out there somewhere. I have a few obligatory Futurama references, and then others are just the default names because when you are doing heavy planetary building it gets boring coming up with dozens of names.
At first, I used famous places in the Old West like Dodge City, Tombstone, etc. Then the 5 stooges came along, followed by the first five letters in the phonetic alphabet, then I just used the default names for the same reasons Bailey had.
Damn--y'all got so many planets that you've run out of names for them?!? I must really suck at this game!
[action=phantomofthenet]fondles that T-shirt again...[/action] The Star Kingdom of Manticore ought to be obvious to any self-respecting geek. And I just name planets for what comes to mind at the moment.
I've decided my planets will henceforth be named after planets found in Stars! . Unfortunately, I sat down to brainstorm a list, and it's been so long since I played that game, I could only come up with three or four good ones. I could open a game or two and look, but I don't need to get sucked in again at this particular point in time
I have 100+ worlds, I don't bother naming them anymore. In the beginning I was naming them after what I was planning to trade from them but that strategy seems to be very limited in scope, only for the first week or so and just to boost your standard trading income. After that I was just conquering systems, so I just left them as is; any of my worlds with a funky name was something I took from someone else (ie. Chulak in 134). Once I just started into heavy world building I just left them the default since I can tell at a glance what sector they're in and it helps me figure out my trade routes quickly. I also have a bunch of "Unnamed" that I've developed (in fact all but one of my worlds are developed at this point, the last being a tribute to the person I conquered it from if they ever want to take it back). I just never bothered to rename them anything interesting because frankly, I don't much care about them.
Im not in this game anymore, but mine were all named after my mates cat Bob. I had Bob, Bob the planet, Bobs mate Bob, Big Bob, Scary Bob and Very Bob indeed
I go with scifi names or funny names. I found 'garbage world' which I renamed 'Recycled World' and then built 'Reduced' and 'Reused' world. I also have Alpha Centauri Pi
[?=a nice convenient list for me to pick from] Wobegon Sea Squared Blue Ball Flaming Poodle Nu (etc.) Globular Rex Wrench Red Ball Leaky Pipe Ice Patch Talking Desert Delta Delta Delta Gunk Fizbin Dyson Godel Afterthought Revelation Mana Woozle Sand Castle Cinnamon Draco Molybdenum Snuffles Red Giant Black Hole Radian Lekgolo Yuppie Puppy Horselover Fat Hoze-O-Rama Bob Wobbly Wammalammadingdong Nope Aluminum Zebra[/?]
I'm thinking about going with medical/disease names once I run out of Andromeda and Hyperion planet names. You know, stuff like: Endometriosis Epidermis Lupus Herpes ArterioLateralSchlerosis Cirrohsis etc...
I just built some new ones. Now the planet 'Sullust' shares its orbit with 'Near Sullust' and 'No Rebel Fleet Here'.
^ Come to think of it -- just before we reset the game, I should boost Beam and all my other fighting techs as high as I can get them and bulk up one of my worlds with a base and gobs of fighters and energy, and then rename it "Inoperational Battlestation".
Another thing I miss from Trade Wars...the ability to outfit your worlds with transwarp drives and go wandering around the galaxy.
Started with a Brit theme, but it sounds a bit silly after a while. I like the ones I've got, but if we reboot I'll probably go with another naming system.
I used to use neat names (in past games) but it just makes management easier to use <sector#>-<planet#>. I remove the prefix from the default basically.
