I don't put on a persona here. After my home here with Zel, WF is probably where I am most myself.

I tend to be very shy, IRL, until I get to know someone and I write far better than I speak.

WF is also where I can vent about my medical issues without burdening my family with it. I know El Chup, for example, thinks it's rep and attention whoring, but it isn't...most of the fronts I put up are IRL and a major one is "I'm fine!!" no matter how untrue that actually is. Here I can just let some frustration out and no one suffers for it.

Of course, I am very capable of creating and running a persona when and if I need one, but there has to be a reason for it for me to bother with the aggravation of it.

I don't say anything online that I wouldn't to someone's face. Although IRL I don't talk as much as I do online (which means jack shit to most of you coz I've barely posted here so far). And I'm shy around people at first.

As for speech patterns vs. writing style, I hear myself say everything I write in my head as I type it. So I'd say it's the same.

for me, posting on a BBS or something similar is NOT "formal writing" - it's basically like transcribed conversation.

I bend or break a lot of rules of punctuation because I think I communicate tone, intent, emotion, etc better when I try to illustrate it (as opposed to what formal writing would dictate)

For instance, ellipses in formal writing communicates something missing or skipped. but when I use them, almost always, I'm saying (pause) - one of the ways of avoiding the confusion of commas within commas... or else I put it at the end of a sentence with the intent of (kind of) saying "I could say more but I'm rambling so I'll just trail off"

that last bit is utter nonsense of course, but it's consistent with "writing a speech pattern"

So, yeah, unless I'm doing something somewhat formal, I definitely write like I talk.

Like most I can't see much if any difference in my real life and my on-line persona, other than that I show different sides of myself in different places. There are things I say and do in trans-friendly places, or places where I'm only known as female, that are considerably more "girly" than how I act here, or, say, on Facebook, because I'm self conscious of the appearance of an affected persona - ironically, i affect a somewhat more gender neutral persona than actually exists in order to avoid the appearance of affecting a girly persona - crazy eh? But even so, it's only a few degrees off reality.

The dominate facet of my personality, on-line or real life, is tons of opinions and an addiction to sharing them, lol.

I guess I'm the same as IRL... or, rather, I should say that I don't intentionally try to be something I'm not.

However, written language is very limited. My facial expressions and body language are not conveyed. And I have chosen not to share many important details of my life which I would more freely share with someone I have met IRL.

I would say that the user you all know as 'Robotech Master' is only just a fragment of my total personality. Or maybe an echo of the real me.

I think that goes for most everyone else here, as well.

I will admit that I did play around with a troll persona on TK many, many years ago... but I'm not gonna say who I was. ;)

I mostly did that out of boredom and just to see what sort of reaction I'd get out of people. The results were.... entertaining.

But it has been years since I've bothered with anything like that. I have way too many things going on IRL to play those sorts of games anymore.

Possibly to get a reaction? To entertain? To role-play? To just be someone different for a short slice of the day?

Why do you choose to be an actor? Probably similar reasons.

Yeah, but what a lack of imagination that shows.

Anyone can be an asshole with the proper application of various liquors.
    That's no feat.

Now, if I wanted to be something different, I dunno, I'd guess I'd be a guy with a house for a head, and the old married couple that lives inside hate each other, and have horrible rows, that sometimes escalate into the physical.

And they're oblivious for some reason that their house is a guy who's killing ninjas.

    Something like that.
Nothing too convoluted and done up....

I'm very reclusive irl, keep to myself and generally try to stay in the background unless I'm working, then I tend to be the "do it my way" guy unless I'm just a peon in the project. This is one of the reasons I tend to be self employed for the most part because I don't have to deal with other people's bullshit and grandiosity.
Always been a below the radar kind of guy.

I'm probably less profane here but then again pushed to limits I'm not afraid to tell a person to go fuck themselves to their face and dare a reaction. I have to be pushed pretty far or be threatened to go there though for the most part.

Here, I probably am more likely to discuss politics since the old adage about not doing so has more serious concequences irl. Hard to say anything against the current administration for instance without having to defend myself as not being racist, but I usually turn that around to where their small mindedness is shown to all present while defending myself on facts not speculation.
Best just left alone unless brought up by someone else.

 No real persona, just a guy trying to get along and learn something while contributing when I can.

    Ahhh....no.

Political differences aside, no one here acts such a complete fool on here as Tas does, nothing remotely comparable. when he's "on" he's as over-the-top as Baba's persona.

Whatever one thinks of mike's politics, that's an entirely different subject.

I probably get a little more over the top sometimes here than I am IRL, but basically, I'm about the same.

As those on my Facebook page can testify, I really am something of a Civil War historian and an advocate for the Confederates and all American veterans IRL.

Right, but he never posts giant text shouting childish insults for self-defeating effect.

He doesn't intentionally use slur words he thinks will "shock" people and so forth.

He doesn't toss off an ad homonim personal attack followed by a :)

I am the same here as I am in real life. It wasn't always that way, but being here and on TBBS, talking to people from different beliefs and cultures, got me to expand my horizons and to not limit myself. I was so incredibly bashful when I joined TBBS, a little better when I joined Wordforge, and now I'm much more vocal and opinionated, though it's still balanced by respect and tempered by caution.

What I do like about places like TBBS and WF is that I can use them as a sounding board for ideas. If I find the idea well received or more thoroughly considered through various lenses, then I can know whether it's wise to implement it in every day life or to let it drop as something implausible. That said, if you ever get the chance to meet me, I'm quite gregarious, and tend to smile a lot more. That's all genuine. I smile when I post, but, well, you can't really see that.

Well, imagine there is at least some truth to the things Tasvir has told us...and I tend to believe much of it aside from maybe some exaggeration.

When we had a thread where WFers posted recorded messages, his voice was very much not what you'd expect...he sounded educated and well spoken with an upper-class sounding accent.

Assuming at least well-to-do and the way the culture is where he is from, he must live a life of unrelenting structure and control where manners and appearance are everything...anything else risks reputation and family honor.

Now he finds himself in a place where he is anonymous and speech is about as free as you can find it anywhere...a place where no one he knows will ever see him...reveling in the extremes must be like a hit of crack to someone like that.

I think the novelty has faded even for him at this point, though and he often posts that way still out of habit and keeping the persona intact so his personal venting place is always ready for when he needs to let of steam where no one who counts in his real life will judge him.

Thank you! Not exaggerating but when I first came to the States, everyone was asking me if I was from England, even though I don't find my accent to be even remotely English! But then they'd be shocked to know I never went to England.

Wellll.. not wrong, but its a *bit* different than that. As a single child of my family, a family that is in NO WAY as structured as the obvious Asian / Indian family many might hear of, I have not just had the leeway of 'going against the cultural gain' so to speak, but I was from a very young age much more 'Westernized' than my peers, friends and circles. Manners and appearance are in general, yes, a big part of my previous society. Examples would be:

    - not raise voice too above in front of elders.
    - give up seats to women, elders, and respectable people even if abundance of seats are available
    - give credence to your religious background in over the top aspects..

Of course, that third part is something I could care less about and that had alienated me from a lot of 'blessings' from elders (fuck that!) but I have in no way ever been disrespectful to them even if they pointed fingers at me and told my parents to their faces I am hellbound. My parents, bless their hearts, would just laugh at their faces and tell them they are a bunch of fucking idiots.

Acquaintance: "He isnt fasting during the month of Ramadan? Why not?? What kind of a Muslim is he??"
My Dad: "He kinda sorta enjoys his food a bit too much" *shrugs*

    :rotfl:

True, but its more so I can be absolutely stupid and generally an entertainer (you should see me amongst my closest friends!) and I know that more people here than not, ones that don't "live" on WF (like actormike, Diacanu or Nova) understand its more for crass comedic value than an intention of being purely hostile. Anyone that has tried to personally know me here has seen that.

In the age of free gonzo porn online, its hard to shock even the strongest of Libtards nowadays!

    :polarslam:

There SERIOUSLY should be a stump clapping a hand emoticon / .gif file on WF. Tamar, you hit the nail square on the head!
