And these are the conversations that should be carried over to the "age" threads.

Damn we have some skinny fuckers on WF. I was only 150 at 71" when I first joined in 1980, but I probably couldn't bench press anything near that (if I had ever entered a gym in those days). I hate pics of myself back then.....no muscle at all.

Another skinny one. The USAF would allow you to go up to 91kg.

I am guessing that the negrep was aimed at your ridiculous and arrogant "Don't tell me you are against equality" statement, not a mere disagreement about whether or not the Air Force has the same standard for both sexes.

    "Sarcasm, the grumpy man's wit."

Given what's usually slung around here, characterizing that itty-bitty comment as either "ridiculous" or "arrogant" requires really thin skin.

Guess if he'd larded it with smilies it would have been understood as tongue in cheek.

So what are the rules about rounding to the nearest inch? I notice nobody here is 70.75 inches. I'm right at 5'11.5" Do I round up or down?

Other than BMI being horseshit and not taking into account muscle weighs more than fat? Thus, bodyfat measurements are the real deal.

According to BMI half the folks I know are "overweight" yet their bodyfat measurements and physical strength/endurance say otherwise.

I guess for the average Joe who has a sedentary non-physical (thus not demanding much muscularity) job BMI might make sense.

As with the charts in the OP, there should be separate BMI calculations for men and women because, you're right, someone with a higher percentage of muscle to fat is not going to do well with a BMI alone. However, to dismiss the entire concept as "horseshit" is exactly the outcome I predicted: "It doesn't work for me; therefore it's horseshit."

That's as much "one size fits all" as your standard BMI chart. :bailey:

No, BMI never makes sense. It's another useless, one-size-fits-all measure for people who don't want to think too much.

BMI is a tool, like a scale or a mirror is a tool. It's just another form of measurement.

yeah, except I'm fairly active and at least half of my paid jobs are physical.

Body fat? Yeah right... I have none. Like Quas, I can eat a large pizza in a sitting and not gain a pound.

Interesting correlation between "Oh, cool! The Air Force says I'm not fat!" and "BMI sucks!"

True, but it's a worthless measurement. It's like measuring the length of your house in Frisbees. There are better, more accurate ways.

Bodyfat has many different methods, but all are very close to each other if done right. The Air Force had my son at 23.5 percent. The Army had him at 22.75 percent. I had him at 23 (using The Army method at home). Measuring body-fat was one of my Army jobs, so I've done it hundreds of times/had it done to me.

These are pretty small variations, and only take a minute or so to do with a $1 cloth tape measure.

As for BMI I know a few people that are in the preferred zone, but if you measure their body fat they would be over. These folks are "skinny fat" meaning arms like twigs with a pot-belly.
