So long story short China bribed was selected to host this year’s Worldcon, the largest Sci-Fi and Fantasy convention which is also the annual meeting of the World Science Fiction and Fantasy Society.

A big part of every Worldcon is the Hugo Awards. Folks noticed that multiple award winning novels by Chinese descendent authors were not eligible, include Babel which won both the Nebula and Locust awards.

The Hugos are largely irrelevant now. I was on the feed when the President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Foundation Mary Robinette Kowal bragged on Twitter that she was so proud that they had stopped white males from getting any of the awards for a decade straight.

Remember, the Hugos were one of the most progressive organizations for decades, and despite scifi being a largely white male field in the 50-60s (the Hugos being created in 1953), the number of Hugo awards that went to others is nearly 1-1.

I've got no problem with the best author winning each year irrespective of their identity. CJ Cherryh, Lois McMaster Bujold, Joan Vinge, Connie Willis, NK Jemison, JK Rowling, and the best ever IMO, Ursula K Leguin, of course these are some of the all time great and impactful authors that deserve recongition.

But when the head of the organization says 'it's the best writer as long as they aren't white males' then there is a problem.

It doesn't surprise me at all that the leadership sold out to the PRC, the same year that clearly one of the leaders for best novel is a Chinese dissident who was then banned from consideration.

Interesting that Orson Scott Card is active on Quora and frequently interacts with posters. He is unfailingly gracious and thoughtful with his responses (although I've not seen how he reacts to someone who tells him they hate his work). I tried to read "Ender's Game" and found it so simplistic and dull that I couldn't finish it. Ironically I had the same reaction to Frank Herbert's "Soul Catcher" which I found turgid and condescending to the point that I couldn't finish it either.
ETA: "Ender's Game" reminds me of what Verhooven seems to think "Starship Troopers" was really about. I wonder what a Verhooven version of "Ender's Game" would have looked like.

Of course, "Ender's Game" is considered a sci-fi classic by many while "Soul Catcher" is just an obscure item on Herbert's bibliography, but

Card, however, is a raging homophobe. Which is why the studio said that they didn't care what kind of money the movie version of "Ender's Game" returned, they weren't going to do a sequel.

The only thing that I've read of Card's that I can recall is "Pastwatch," which was okay, but goddamn that motherfucker really buys the whole Mormon bullshit.

Not gonna lie I was a bit… uh… federaled farmered when I created this thread and even stone ass sober I’m not sure how the kids treat physical/metaphysical (think ‘literally’)… but there is something I won’t stand for and that is disrespecting Chuck Tingle. I don’t presume the arrogance to say I’m a buckaroo but I want to be.

All that to say, if I need to edit the thread title let me know.

The only criticism I have of the title is that Chuck Tingle is all about butt pounding, not ass pounding. The distinction is a small one, but an important one.
