Huh. Apparently South Carolina did secede over State’s Rights.

They were pissed that non-slaver states weren’t enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act vigorously enough and that the Federal Government wasn’t doing enough to force them to:

[T]he State of South Carolina having resumed her separate and equal place among nations, deems it due to herself, to the remaining United States of America, and to the nations of the world, that she should declare the immediate causes which have led to this act….

[A]n increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery, has led to a disregard of their obligations, and the laws of the General Government have ceased to effect the objects of the Constitution. The States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa, have enacted laws which either nullify the Acts of Congress or render useless any attempt to execute them. In many of these States the fugitive is discharged from service or labor claimed, and in none of them has the State Government complied with the stipulation made in the Constitution. . . .

    https://constitutioncenter.org/the-.../south-carolina-declaration-of-secession-1860

So I guess I was wrong. The slavers did rebel over State’s Rights. Just it was other states exercising their right not to participate in their slaving.

Don’t forget Texas trying to force Seattle Children’s (a hospital here) to turn over patient records re gender affirming care:

Seattle Children’s sues Texas AG over request for gender care records
    Dec. 21, 2023 at 10:26 am Updated Dec. 21, 2023 at 5:35 pm

In the lawsuit, filed this month in Travis County District Court in Texas, Seattle Children’s is aiming to protect patient information of Texans who left their home state, where it’s illegal for minors to access gender-affirming care, to seek treatment here, where it is legal.

It also invokes Washington’s new shield law, legislation state lawmakers approved earlier this year to protect hospitals from being forced to share information about transgender and gender-diverse children who are seeking medical care. Many Democrat-led states have passed similar shield laws, fearing that people crossing state lines for abortions and gender-affirming care could be prosecuted as more Republican-led states continue to pass laws restricting access to these services.

Lol, how the fuck would Texas be able to defeat even the most basic jurisdiction-based motion to dismiss on that?

Edit: oh never mind, you left out a key fact: Seattle Children's is the one that filed suit based on investigative demands from the Texas AG. But it looks like Seattle Children's is making the right argument:

"In the complaint, the Seattle hospital argues Texas authorities don’t have jurisdiction over these Washington patient records and calls the requests a “sham” and “improper.”"

Scallywags will never understand the nuances involved with the civil war because they don’t want to. They’d rather spin propaganda than learn any real truth and history. It’s sad when you think about it. Why post the secession documents when you’re not going to talk about the economic reasons South Carolina mentioned, unless you’re trying to push a certain narrative.

Also, the fugitive slave act was a federal law and part of the compromise of 1850, not a states rights’ issue.

As with the term carpetbagger, the word has a long history of use as a slur in Southern partisan debates. The post-Civil War opponents of the scalawags claimed they were disloyal to traditional values and white supremacy.

In their Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union South Carolina did not mention any economic issues other than slavery.

Congressman Lawerence Keitt at the South Carolina secession convention. "Our people have come to this on the question of slavery. I am willing, in that address to rest it upon that question. I think it is the great central point from which we are now proceeding, and I am not willing to divert the public attention from it." Taken from the Charleston, South Carolina, Courier, dated Dec. 22, 1860

The minutes show that immediately after that the convention downvoted mentioning tariffs as one of the causes of secession. The vote was unanimous.

Keitt became a Colonel in the South Carolina militia and during his first field experience was shot in the liver by the troops of Philip Sheridan and died in agony in a field hospital. His division broke and fled and was routed from the field.

Damn, I love a happy ending.

Yeah! It was so nuanced that they put it right in the second sentence of their Declaration of Secession... Which is what @Ancalagon posted up above. Georgia even waited to put it all the way in the second paragraph.

I mean, who has that kind of attention span?

I didn’t say they mentioned the tariff in the secession declaration, I said why bring up the secession declaration without bringing up other factors that very much were at play. By the way, Georgia did mention the tariff in their secession declaration.

Why didn't South Carolina put those other factors in their declaration, if those factors were so important in motivating them to secede?

I wish the South had been given the right to secede...in 1865. Slaves freed, states in ruins, cities on fire. Sure! Go off and embrace your destiny as a Third World, Christian Fundamentalist hellscape.

    Good riddance.
