I mean, those were the days for television. They actually had good stuff on TV on Saturday mornings--"Beekman's World", "Earthworm Jim", "Animaniacs", etc. You had "Batman: The Animated Series" and the new "Superman" series. "Star Trek: TNG" was still going strong, DS9 was OK. Hell, even VOY had some promise in those days. Then there was the Sunday night lineup on the local Fox affiliate. They had some kind of whacky videos show that didn't suck balls, followed by "The Simpsons" (which was still funny), "King of the Hill" (which was also funny), "The X-Files" (which was still good), and then they rolled into the syndicated juggernaut of "Hercules", "Xena", and "Highlander". Oh, and NBC had "Friends" chugging along it its prime and I was still the target demographic. Now, if I'm lucky in another 5-10 years they'll do a "Golden Girls" remake with Phoebe, Rachael, and Courtney Cox that will be sponsored by AARP and Metamucil.
The 2000's haven't been bad either. We have Prison Break, Battlestar Galactica, the first season of Desperate Housewives, Firefly, Deadwood, not to mention shows that are hugely popular with mainstream audiences like CSI, The West Wing, House, Grey's Anatomy, etc. When we reach the next decade, I'd say we'll look back and see that the 2000's give the 1990's a run for their money, in terms of good television.
But if you like music videos now you have a gazillion MTV spinoff channels with shows like "sucker free thuggin'" "booty shakin' big rims Sunday" and "*** all you mother ******* punk *** little *******!"
Vast. Wasteland. On the gripping hand, we're getting a lot of DVD-watching done, of older TV shows that we used to like that are actually good.
Yay, old people whining! Arrested Development, The Shield, Anthony Bourdain, Family Guy, Dexter, Galactica, South Park, should I go on?
It's not that there aren't shows on lately that I don't think are good, it's just that there hasn't been a new episode of any fucking thing in months thanks to the writers-strike-induced short season. There's a little light at the end of the tunnel with new eps of Eureka and SG-Atlantis. There were supposed to be new eps of Mythbusters but fucking Discovery pulled them in fear of losing viewers to the olympics. I'll be happy when our normal fare is back in swing - Bones, Medium, House, CSI. I hear no new Dr. Who for over a year!? Meantime we're enjoying old stuff every night that we used to like - SNL season 2, Buffy s2, Mannix, Mod Squad, Beauty and the Beast, The Equalizer, The Invaders, Hogan's Heroes, The Muppets, Animaniacs, Odd Couple, Barney Miller, McHale's Navy.... Things I have on DVD that Mary doesn't wanna watch with me: Wild Wild West, Hawaii 5-0, Mission: Impossible, The Protectors, Superman (Reeves), Man from UNCLE, I Spy, Miami Vice ...
I dont miss the past. But I can watch DVD's or TV Land for the older stuff. I prefer to live in the present and hope for good TV in the future. AND NO FUCKING REMAKES FROM HOLLYWEIRD!!!
I miss the early 90's because I was in my early 20's. Now it's the late 00's and I'm in my late 30's.
In the early 90's I was in my late twenties/early thirties....life was sweet! Now I'm old and breaking down.
Meh. I watched too much TV when I was a kid anyway. I'm kind of glad TV is shitty now. Nowadays, I'd much rather be outside doing something with friends. I'll only turn on the tube if it's horrible weather and I'm really bored with nothing else to do. If I want to catch the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica or Smallville I will just d!*?!@#$*! it. And I've got a ton of DVDs to go through. It makes the decision to not spend money on cable TV that much easier.
And Mewa will constantly spam the board with Married, with Children threads. Especially if they made a movie.
I liked the early 90s -- first few years of adulthood are definitely a good time for most, but I'm pretty satisfied with late 30s, and expect nothing but more good stuff in my 40s. Thing with T.V. in the summer, is I prefer watching baseball, so I have no room for Seinfeld nostalgia at the moment.
I would argue that television has rivalled the movies for several years now in terms of writing and acting excellence. There's a lot of great stuff on TV right now. There's also a lot of shit. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
Lucky you. My short term memory/concentration is going, my hearing, my vision, my taste buds, my libido (least of my concerns) etc. BTW - is not caring about your libido a symtom of a declining libido? Thanks...now my mind is blown wrapping my head around this conundrum.
When we had cable, I initially got nothing done because of all the neat stuff but eventually it just became more reruns than new to me so I pulled the plug and spend that money doing outside stuff. Only time I miss it is like right about now, with elections looming but really I can get all I need and less BS right here on the keyboard, very often before mainstream picks it up. National channels are Ok, except when the onslaught of paid programming hits.
I watch a lot of History Channel, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, etc. Rarely do I watch sitcoms except for Sienfeld. I like Family Guy, but I've seen every episode so often I'm tapering off on that pretty fast.
The early 90's? Meh. Overall, television is better now than it's ever been. Sure, cartoons were better in the early 90s, but what about everything else? There was what, Friends and Seinfeld? Those shows were okay, but look at what's still on or has just finished up recently: Deadwood, Entourage, Rome, Six Feet Under, Curb Your Enthusiasm (which is much better than Seinfeld), Big Love, Dexter, The Office, Battlestar Galactica, Burn Notice, Lost. As for great shows that didn't run long but were made in the past few years, there's Veronica Mars and Arrested Development that I can think of off the top of my head. Not to mention anything that Joss Whedon did.
Never really watched any tv in the 90's apart from lois and clark on a sunday afternoon when the family had afternoon tea. (cakes, tea, biscuits)
