New movie from Mike Judge (OFFICE SPACE). Completely over the top satire about the world in 500 years. Overdone in parts, hilarious in others and there's even a little message in there. But don't worry, UA, it's all so colorful and loud that you can totally ignore it. And there are monster trucks I'll give it 8 out of 10. It's not as great as the cubicle movie (9.5/10) but absolutely worth your time for the crops field scene and Luke Wilson's average guy routine alone.
I want to see it. Too bad it was theater released on a very limited basis. I haven't seen it for rent around here either.
for a similar theme, try rob grant's (co-creator of red dwarf) book incompetence i've not got around to reading it yet, but it sounds like idiocracy has a similar theme.
Theater. Rent. Older people are soooo cute with their quaint ways. I burned an 'acquired' copy Saturday. I'll try to watch it sometime today.
Seems like FOX got cold feet after seeing it. From what I hear, they actively sabotaged it and only released it because there were contractual obligations. I can understand them - after all they are actively working on creating the world it shows (even more active than other major media outlets). Here's hoping that it will become a sleeper hit on DVD like OFFICE SPACE. I'm afraid that it's a little over the top tho. The older movie is something everybody who's ever worked in a big company can relate to.
Oh, definitely. I mean, I had heard stories about how FOX was supposedly unable to come up with a likable trailer and all, but after actually seeing it, it was obvious they just wanted it dead. Knowing FOX, they were probably doing it for their own rather selfish interests as well as trying to avoid lawsuits from the various companies that made an appearance (i.e. the Pepsi family, Costco, SBC, etc., etc.). Due to the utterly rediculous distribution of this film, I had to see it via...aquisition...but I plan to buy it on 9 January when it is released on DVD stateside. That is, of course, if they actually send it out to stores .
It was uneven but the funny moments make it absolutely worth it. And the first 20 minutes are brilliant.
I'll admit to laughing my ass off at Ow! My Balls! It works as both satire and the pure juvenille humor of a guy getting his testes abused in the most absurd ways.
After seeing it, I can partially understand why FUX thought they'd have a hard time marketing it. It seems to poke fun at most of their core constituancy - the truck-driving, GIT-R-Dun crowd. That's a shame 'cause it's damn funny, especially Ow, my Balls!, "Brought to you by Carl's Jr.", ASS, Starbucks handjobs, the way giving the finger has replaced waving, the "House of Representin'", and how everyone's named after bad products (Frito, Velveeta). Oh, and the Army pimp and the fact that they're over 8000 "Updayedd"s(with 2 'Ds' for a double-dose of pimpin) in the phonebook.
I saw this on DVD tonight, perks of working at blockbuster, and I must say... It is a little scary that that is a slight exaguration of where we are headed...
I read about idiocracy. Apparently, it tested so poorly in screenings that it was impossible to create a trailer or commercial for the film that wouldn't DISINCLINE people to see it. I'm pretty sure I'll never watch it.
January 9th? Hell yes I'm renting it. While I don't relish giving Fox any more of my money, I want to support Judge.
Basically, it all came down to the head of Fox's film division not getting the movie, so he cut it off at the knees.
I think they might have been more worried about getting sued given all the companies that were rather viciously mocked (the evolution of Fuddrockers was hilarious).
I'll check it out. I'm one of those people who will give Judge the benefit of the doubt on just about anything.
I bought the DVD Saturday and watched it. My take? A good idea with so-so execution. A lot of funny bits, but the the film doesn't seem like enough for a feature length movie. I think Luke Wilson is tailor-made to play an 'everyman'-type. Some especially funny moments (to me): 1. The receptionist at the hospital using a 'picture menu' to select a patient's symptoms. 2. Ow, My Balls! 3. The crowd gathering to cheer on the cops shooting up a car (and even the car's owner gets caught up in the whooping). 4. The opening bit that contrasted a sophisticated, intellectual couple with 'Clevon.' 5. 'Beef' inadvertantly lighting up a stagehand with his flamethrower. 6. Rehabilitation 7. Fuddruckers Good stuff. The story as a whole isn't especially ambitious (Wilson's character--the smartest man on planet Earth in the year 2505--has to solve one rather obvious problem) and the ending doesn't have much impact. Overall, a 6 with several moments that rate an 8 or 9.
I think you nailed it. The overall story was rather weak but there were so many hilarious little bits the movie worked. I'd add a bunch of scenes to the list. 1) The military researcher's presentation, particularly Joe's graphs and winning Upgrayedd's trust. "You see gentlemen, a pimp's love is very different then a square's." 2) Justin Long's cameo as Dr. Lexus. "So basically it says here you're fucked up, you sound like a fag, and your shit's all retarded." "My first wife was 'tarded. She's a pilot now." 3) The entire trial scene, especially the prosecutor. 4) President Camacho's speech to the House of Representin'. First line on the teleprompter: "Shit." 5) Tons of little stuff you have to pause to see. Joe's rap sheet included charges of "being a dick", for instance.
