Hmm, y'know, I think I like it better'n cable. Goes rougly as fast as cable, except goes smooth, no hiccups. So really, it's faster. Cheaper too.
Odd, I had always been a DSL fan. A HARDCORE DSL fan. But now that I have cable in my house (DSL wasn't available here when I bought the place in October), I have noticed how much better cable is. What's your Download speed? 1.5 MBit/Sec? More?
Before I had tried any of it, I was a DSL fan for the fact that the bandwidth isn't shared. But the cable service I have is kick ass, so wachagonnado? Dicky, were your streaming, er, videos, stalling at key moments, just before something climactic?
Haven't tried downloading yet, but youtube hiccuped a lot, now it don't. I think we just had shitty Roadrunner service.
Errr... doesn't your service advertise it's download rates? If not, why did you get the service if you don't know what service you're getting?
Just did a speed test on their site. Here's the stats. Download Speed: 2080 kbps (260 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 647 kbps (80.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Ok, that's pretty good. But seriously, doesn't the DSL service provider that you have actually advertise their speeds? In Phoenix, Qwest's DSL won't let you get away with not knowing that it's 1.5 MBit/Sec or 3 MBit/Sec or whatever since you have to sign up for a specific tier.
I didn't do the signing up. (Did the installing though. ) Ma ordered it all over the phone, so there was no literature.
Ok gotcha. Nevertheless, those are good speeds. When I had DSL it was only 1.5 Mbit/Sec. Yours is clearly 2.0 MBit/Sec.
I was on DSL up til about a month ago. Shitty ass 384kbps download speed. But now I have wonderful 3.0Mbps cable.
It depends on your provider. I used to have DSL, but we were so far away from the server that it was a waste of money. Interestingly enough D, I'd have bet that cable would be the better choice for you: It's not really location dependent, and the low number of subscribers would mean high speeds for you.
Yeah, that's one of the main reasons we switched from Cable to DSL. Comcast apparently hates loyal customers. They would guarantee up to 5 MBPS or so, but we'd get less than half that. Plus the Cable modem would have to be restarted on a weekly basis because it wasn't getting a signal. Also, it was damned expensive. DSL has been much better to us. Only gone down a few times in the years we've had it. We could get pretty much the same speed that was guaranteed with Cable for $10 less.
My comcast is "up to" 6 mb advertised. 6.2 megabits per second on a test I just ran. Even faster at my home than at my apt (probably due to lower usage from people in that area). At home I often get 7-8 mbps. I bought my own modem at home though, rather than paying to borrow one every month. Latency is great too. If I play games on servers that are located nearby, I can get ping as low as 6. Yes thats 6, not 60. Frankly I've never noticed a lack of smoothness... having had cable internet for years and years (since it was Comcast @HOME, before @HOME went out of business.) I hear a lot of comcast bashing but really I don't ever have problems.
They're probably better in different areas, in fact I'm sure they're better in different areas. But in my area they suck. Even with cable TV. Especially with HD TV. Plus they overcharge for everything, delete channels on a whim, and raise prices without notification.
Uhh... DSL... no idea on the speeds, but suffice to say they are shitty. Plus I am at work and this computer sucks anyway.
5Mbit here as well.. haven't tried gaming yet, though. I fried my graphics card and cpu a while back so I have cheap & low performance replacements on which I can't play anything But my bittorrents sometimes reach 270Kb/sec, and downloading a movie trailer flies at 560Kb/sec
I was very satisfied with Verizon DSL for years. It wasn't blazing fast, but it beat the shit out of dial-up and was rock solid reliable. I switched over to FIOS as soon as they offered it and got 5MB down 1.8 up (about 3x what I had), better cable service than I got from DISH and phone service for less than what the three were costing seperately. Good stuff and good value. I'm no big phone company booster, but obviously the bundling concept is a powerhouse marketing ploy.
Yeap... Cable and Phone companies are bitter rivals. Comcast has VoIP phone service now, and phone companies have snatched up the Satellite providers... so really it's getting pretty "winner take all". If Verizon offered FIOS in my area I'd probably drop comcast and switch over (I currently have Verizon Wireless as well).
Cable works out better for me. I don't need a land line, and when I did have one it ran me about $30. If I added dsl to that I would be paying more than I would be for cable and have lower speeds.
