This weekend I watched Serenity on HBO. Of course it was on at 10am on saturday. Also HBO gets all the suck ass movies. But whadayagonnadoo. Now I had liked the movie when I first saw it at a free screening that had about 50 Browncoats and various others from off the street. Going by the Browncoats here you woulda thought there would be a big turnout. Not so. Still the NYC band of Browncoats were there in all their GEEK/DWEEB glory. There were plenty of pocket protectors and pale skin. Anyway, I hadn't seen the flick since it had first came out. I'm pretty sure the fans here have worn out there first copy and are on to their second copy. I mean its the only way to pump up the numbers. Serenity is visually beautiful. It looked outstanding on my big screen HD LCDTV at home. Its just that some elements of the movie are just so...so tv. So smallscreen. But I have to say that Nathan Fillion works hard to be the big strong Mal. But the insecurities play better on TV than the big screen. The only way to really get the movie is to have seen all 7 of the Firefly eps from TV. In the beginning, River as a child says the government is meddlesome. HUH???! You had to know about that from the show. Star Trek movies don't require that you be a Trekkie. But all in all I recommend Serenity for a very colorful and exciting sci-fi adventure that doesn't require much brain activity from the watcher. Just watch it and go Ooooh and Ahhhhh at the great scenes. But then go Whatever when they do dumb stuff. A non-Browncoat will wonder how come that mug Mal didn't die. Or who the hell was that Shephard fag. Oh well, Jayne will make you chuckle a bit. Whadaygonnadoo.
There are plenty of people who have pale skin who aren't geeks/dweebs, and as you and I prove, there are geeks/dweebs without pale skin. I think there's less information required of a brand-new "Serenity" viewer than there is of a brand-new "Star Trek" movie viewer as to who these people are and how the universe works. It's just that a lot of the "Star Trek" info has filtered into pop culture (Spock being a logical, highly intelligent Vulcan, Scotty being a miracle worker who beams people up, etc.) Mal didn't die for the same reason just about every main character didn't die at the end. Because he's a main character.
I keep telling Mewa to use condoms. If his period is overdue, he's got no one but himself to blame. (Just going on the thread title - no, I didn't read the rest of the thread. )
I say BUY Serenity! It will always give you fond memories. Just the sight if the box on your shelf should make you laugh a little. Its the kind of movie that if you have friends over, its raining outside, not much to do. You can whip out that movie and say Hey, anyone seen Serenity? The overwhelming odds are that they have never heard of it. When you tell them its from that show Firefly they will be like But you can still push it cuz the movie really looks good. You guys can keep on talking various crap while the movie is on. And every now and then you will be drawn to the screen.
I guess that I am mistaken that the gallows is generally that from which people are hung, excepting the occasional hemlock in front of a jailhouse.
I hope that you are choosing to ignore this obvious jab rather than not noticing what I am trying to imply. No sadly I don't, look like Hank I mean. I want a kerchief.
One can never be too sure. I guess I got thoroughly foiled there, but I guess you would have to be pretty dead to those sorts of jokes by now.
