Prompted by some of the posts in the Pelosi press release thread.

US gas prices reached $4/gallon this year, and both oil and gas prices seem to be on an inexorable long-term uptrend.

If we double that magical $4 number, we get $8. In what year do you think US gas prices will reach $8/gallon?

Edit: If a mod could change the title to "In What Year Do You Think US Gas Prices Will Reach $8/Gallon", that would be helpful. :)

It will take longer than that. Give the next administration a month at least.

If we're hit by a hurricane in the gulf region it could very well be this year.

I didn't vote because it' multi-factorial. I think that we're likely to see the dollar begin to appreciate given the fed's stance against inflation. He's likely to raise intrest rates increasing the scarcity of dollars and increasing it's buying power.

If China and India continue to grow at these paces it will put upward pressure on gas prices.

I could see it happening when Obama becomes President, but there are a lot of oil projects coming online next year. More production = even lower prices.

    Never.

Once it goes up to five or six dollars a gallon, any member of Congress who opposes off shore drilling will be tossed out in the next election cycle.

Drilling for more oil in the U.S. is likely to be the "Same Sex Marriage Issue" of the 2008 election.

Don't worry, Obaba, I mean Obama will probably solve that problem too. He'll sign executive orders outlawing any further drilling for oil in the US.

Oh and, did you notice how Darkening gave you a positive rep, while calling you a tard? What's up with that?

I think the $ is more volatile than oil right now. If you want to predict the price of oil in $$, focus on changes to the $, not just to the oil market.

In real dollars, I don't think it will ever reach $8 a gallon. Adjusted for inflation from about 90 years ago, we've always paid between $1.50-$3.50 per gallon. Right now I think we're a little above $3. One of the reasons gas seems so expensive is because the dollar has become weaker.

In nominal dollars, I don't think it will happen for at least a decade, if ever. So I voted for the last option.

If Obama is elected, 2016 at the earliest.

    Actually Dayton is right.

As soon as it hits between 5 and 6 dollars you can expect all the assholes blocking all sorts of drilling to suddenly change their minds or to get kicked out of office.

Since we know a lot of price is speculation on what oil production will be in the future opening up all sorts of stuff to oil drilling will lead to speculation that there will be more oil on the market leading to price drops.

We will be drilling everywhere. Oh and I also predict that we will start building nukes left and right to help bring down our oil usage for generating power.

Increasing nuke power will reduce natural gas and oil usage for power production. That is a good thing. Only a fool, ie Bobcat, thinks otherwise.

Hey, asshole, what part of "Less than 2% of our electricity comes from oil" didn't you understand? More nuclear power will not have a significant effect on our oil consumption, you idiot. And we weren't talking about natural gas, shit-for-brains.

No, I was talking about natural gas, and as I showed from the first hit on a search your less that 2% comment was utter bullshit likened with the rest of the crap you spew. Get a clue.

I always thought we used more oil for energy production.

I still stand behind my statement though. More nuclear power will reduce our need for oil to be used for power generation. It will also reduce our need for natural gas and for coal.

That picture comes from the Department of Energy website.

Considering your penchant for overstating things regarding the economy, I can't help but laugh at the above.

Who is it that support increasing the federal excise tax on gasoline by 10cents a gallon? It isn't McCain is it?

    So. Bobcat.

Increased drilling in Alaska will have no effect because it is a drop in the bucket.

Increased offshore drilling will have no effect because it is a drop in the bucket.

Adding more nuke plants will have no effect becaust that is a drop in the bucket.

But just by announcing future offshore drilling, Bush has caused a significant drop in the price of both oil and gasoline.

I know you won't admit it here, but you must be secretly glad that someone like Bush, who is clearly far smarter than you, has been in office for the past eight years, yes?
