I think you and the boy are talking two different things. friends and talking to others is something people should be allowed to get, and they have to go out and get. No one owes a person friendship. Humans need a community and contact, and as well have an innate need for intimacy. Most people mistake intimacy for sex. But, what intimacy really is is respect and a desire to be connected on an honest and respectful level.

meeting the basic physiological and safety needs allows someone the space to pursue the social, esteem, and self actualization. Once fulfilled they are better (proportionately) capable of providing those.
