Apple Maps will be the best maps app ever? Its not even close. The only reason you can't admit that is because you're stuck with a shitty product and have to like it because thats all you have.
The interface is way better and it is much faster and more responsive than any other map system I've used. Your need to dislike everything Apple is so over the top that you can't be taken seriously. As for stuck, no. That's a pretty dumb theory. You can tell by reading the 2 threads you've commented in that I've actually got the option of changing now and I'm leaning towards the Galaxy S3, or S4 if I decide to wait a while. The iPhone 4S is still an excellent phone so I don't feel any immediate need to go out and replace it.
Google employs 7,000 more people to work on Google Maps and has been in the game a LONG time. To think that Apple has any chance of catching up when so much depends on user 'support' is laughable at best. As soon as Google releases a native Maps app for iOS, people are going to download in droves. At the end of the day, Apple arrogantly decided to screw over their consumer base and remove Google Maps because they remain committed to take down Google at all costs. The backlash isn't surprising, and is 100% deserved.
Dude, you don't have to be a fanboi either way to realize that Google Maps is a superior product. I travel all over the world and use it constantly.
What's the new maps app like for walking around towns? I've heard that it doesn't handle small laneways and stuff as well, which is a major sticking point for me. For driving around I use a standalone Tom Tom unit. The maps function on the iPhone (using Googlemaps) is really useful for me because it works awesomely when walking around places I don't know. The street view function especially. I probably won't upgrade to iOS6 until a standalone Google Maps app is released.
I really haven't noticed a descernable difference to be honest. I think that Google's YouTube app is far superior to Apple's old one though.
I used it in downtown Memphis yesterday. It got me to the civil right's museum, but it didn't offer to do anything with the trolley!
http://news.yahoo.com/apples-cook-sorry-maps-errors-suggests-rival-services-131626369--finance.html Ouch! I can't see Steve Jobs ever apologizing for anything.
It said right there in your article that he did apologize in 2010 for the reception issues with the iPhone 4.
I tend to use my Garmin for long distance trips and my iPhone for shorter trips. I've noticed that in dense, urban areas the Garmin has a lot of trouble distinguishing between some overlapping roads. Google Maps does a much better job of tracking my location and helping me orient myself along local roads. And it's great for walking around. It's also really convenient to be able to locate an address via Yelp! and then link that to the Maps app Haven't upgraded my iPhone just yet, will probably do that this weekend...
The Maps thing has been blown way out of proportion IMO. Granted, I do not use it for Transit directions and I believe those complaints are quite legitimate. But I haven't had a single issue with it all week. It's fast and accurate and I love the Yelp integration. It does lack some details that Google has but hasn't been an issue for me. I also installed a shortcut to the web based Google Maps which can give me those details should the need arise. I'm looking forward to Google releasing their native Map App for iOS, but I don't feel like I'm lacking anything important now and the turn by turn is fantastic. Quite a bit better than the built in GPS in Samantha's car and the stand alone Garmin unit I used a few years ago.
If you've got a flight out of Denver, don't use Apple Maps to guide you to the airport. http://www.denverpost.com/business/...leads-users-stapleton-airport-mcnichols-arena
I really haven't noticed a problem with the maps app. I live in NYC metro area, so maybe they took extra time in getting that major market right... Witht htat said, Apple has had a checkered past with iPhone software, IMHO. My first encounter was one of the first apps for the iPhone... the Apple Poker app. It's beautiful, but crashed on occasion and was sometimes just buggy. The latest was the Apple Podcast App, which I tried this summer. Not only was that app barey functional, but it actualy destabized the overall performance of the phone itself. I was forced to delete it. Apple now forces their podcasts to played with it, but version 1.1 seems to be much more stable so far.
