Didn't he have a stroke last year? Quite often, the same circulatory problems that cause a stroke can predispose for a heart attack as well.
I have all the early albums. I'm playing Walk on By right now. In the early 70s he had the hottest stage show. Women went crazy for his music. Back then you often saw his poster in single womens rooms. The chain link vest. Man they loved it. He was one of the first to use string arrangements in his music so extensively. Pretty slick for R&B. And it was the best make out music of the time. This is before Barry White or Luther Vandross.
Elvis Costello covered his song "I Stand Accused" on his "Get Happy" album. Whoa...he also co-wrote the Sam + Dave songs "Soul Man" "When something is Wrong with my Baby" and "Hold on, I'm Coming" (with one of the best horn riffs ever!)
Yeah, but two in the same movie within days of one another, by totally unrelated causes? That's pretty weird. Then when you add in that they were both black, it starts to look like that the next guy on the list is gonna be black and from the same film.
Issac was big time. But back then he had not 'crossed over'. Shaft made that happen. On his albums, sometimes songs would be like 8-15 minutes long. He sold loads of records but his early stuff was not on the radio. Also his good years were before FM radio. Shaft and the rise of FM radio caused Issac to change up a bit. He touched on a little disco. But I will call it danceable R&B. His disco was alos very big in the clubs. I Can't Turn Around is one I recall.
I just read (uncredited source) thay Issac wrote....hold on to your hats....WRAP IT UP, I'll TAKE IT! That's my favorite Sam + Dave song. Anyway, here are The Fabulous Thunderbirds totally rocking "Wrap it up." ENJOY! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P3No5P4sFs
Chuck, that link is great. I'm listening to The Look of Love now. Those horns and the strings!! Oh man!!
Dr Dre and Public Enemy sampled much of his music. But most were not aware because it was old stuff. One day I had a young nephew over and I played some Issac Hayes. When the music came on he thought I was playing some Public Enemy. I had to school that boy.
