Show me this magical gun that jumps up on its own and shoots people.

Don't be stupid. Drugs don't jump up on it's own and fly down someone's throat.

Exactly right. They require human intervention. Just like guns. The difference being that irresponsible use of drugs only harms YOU, unless someone else chooses otherwise.

Laws to punish negligent parents? Good luck with that. It's clearly society's fault when someone half-asses their parental responsibilities.

I am not in favor of regulating either, and if you got that impression you are misreading me.

I am in favor of letting people do as they please, only punishing them for the harm they actually cause, rather than for what you choose to assume they will do later.

I'm of a different mindset on this, because I actually do believe Heller was correctly decided. My reading of the 2A is that it does describe an individual right. However, I don't think it forbids things like background checks, registration, age limits, licensing, or waiting periods, any more than the 1st Amendment (which is also an individual right) gives everyone the right to make terrorist threats (technically speech), commit libel (technically speech), or aim a loudspeaker at their neighbor's house and broadcast speech at them at top volume 24/7.

Sudafed doesn't turn into meth all by itself, but I still have to show my ID and sign a logbook to buy it, and any store that doesn't adequately police their sales will face penalties.

No. Drugs are regulated to protect YOU from YOURSELF. Guns are regulated out of fear of what you might do to others. The only way the two compare is the way they doggedly ignore the true source of the problem: bad people with no impulse control.

No, I'm explaining the "regulate our way out of human behavior" delusion. Don't mistake that for agreement. Bad people don't show up to be regulated or punished. If they are in some "bad people" database, that means you had them and let them go. Effectively admitting society has no interest in solving the problem, but still has that Maude Flanders "do something!" itch prodding them into actions that miss the target completely.

No, it's not just "do something". It's "this is what we're going to do". And yes, it will work and no, it won't affect you.

THERE ARE ALREADY BACKROUND CHECKS IN PLACE. Didn't prevent the recent shootings. Why? BECAUSE CRIMINALS DO NOT OBEY THE LAW.

This isn't UK or fucking Australia. You can focus on bad people or you can piss in the wind. These are your options.

And you're damned right your feel good measures won't affect me, because I will not fucking comply.

Background checks do not check for mental illness. It doesn't check if you were bullied in high school. It doesn't check if you've been terrorizing your girlfriend or wife.

So now we're violating medical privacy? Why not warehouse the violent crazies BEFORE they hurt someone?

If you were bullied in fucking high school? I was bullied in school. Who the fuck wasn't?

And don't even start with the invitation for abuse that is "red flag" laws until the punishment for making false accusations equals that of the crime they were claiming occurred. Enough property is already at risk to vindictive ex-partners.

You really want to select for indicators not tied to a proven criminal history, start with no-fault divorce and single motherhood. But nobody is ready to talk about that.

Wow, they check if you have a criminal record. And if it's a private sale, there's not even a check!

No check is watertight, but that's the fucking Titanic AFTER Rose is on the damn door.

If your crime was so terrible that it excludes you from owning a gun, you should never have been released. Address THAT, and leave everyone else the fuck alone.

Oh, a sanity TEST, then. Can't wait to hear how that will be implemented with any utility. What are you gonna do, accuse them of lying on their assessment when someone slips through?

What false accusations? She calls the police, he threatens her more, she tells police "false alarm". That guy? fuck that.. He's the very reason for red flag laws. He definitely should not have a gun.
